The extra volume will improve load times with some games like BF2 which cache a lot of textures. When I had 2x512s, the people with 2x1G of ram left incertion point several seconds before me.
The current system I have is 2x512 and if I buy another gig it will be 1 gig stick. Will it be a lot slower? Does it matter on the positioning of the sticks?

you can use dual channel if its only one stick. so its best to buy if your going to get only on gig 512 x2 .. if you have the room for it.. like my system has 4 dimm slots so i have 2 512 sticks in dual channle mode since dual channel puts out more memory than single chanel

Your CPU is fine but get more RAM if anything 1 GB is alright but 4x512 should work if the slots are there
