TG Daily tours NCSA

This is an excellent article about the NCSA facility where I live. I pass by this place quite often, but had no idea waht went on there or what it looked like inside, until now.

Quote:
The north campus of The University of Illinois in Urbana is home to one of the most powerful and long-running supercomputer facilities in the world. The recent Top 500 list has all five of their primary workhorses listed. Three of them were even in the top 100 with Abe debuting at #8. To walk by the facility you would have no idea what's going on inside. But it's the centers like this which shape much of science and industry. Many believe they even hold the keys to understanding the very nature of our universe.
Quote:
Abe is the latest supercomputer to join NCSA. It is scheduled to go into full production on Monday, July 2, 2007. It's currently operating at full capacity and is rated #8 in the world. It operates at a maximum computing capacity of just under 90 teraflops. Its sustained computing capacity is documented at around 63 teraflops. It is a Linux-based cluster comprised of 1200 Dell PowerEdge 1955s blades. Each blade sports two 2.33 GHz Quad-Core Xeons (Clovertown core) on a 1333 GHz FSB operating in Intel64 mode (true 64-bit computing). That's 2400 physical processors housing 9600 cores. The system communicates with itself and the outside world using an Infiniband network at 10 Gbps. It has 200 TB of disk storage and each core has a dedicated GB of memory all to itself, resulting 9.6 TB of DDR2 memory total.

Superon... I'm a Chambana Guy... I read this article with great interest.

I was lucky enough to play Doom in their 3-D Testing Lab... Kicked ass to look around a corner by tipping ones head.

The UofI is a major point of origin in the Technology world.... Transistors and Mosaic (predecessor of Netscape) all UIUC... the list goes on

Man I just had a Flashback... I can remember using Mosaic in 7th Grade on a Mac... jeez

yea as cheesy as it is, Im kinda proud to call this place home -- with the University and its facilities-- pretty damned cutting-edge. Also I knew about the origins of Mosaic, but I had no idea that the University had anything to do with the development of transistors.
