Is X38 worth waiting for?

Thread Starter
There seems to be excitement building around the X38 chipset, I was wondering if the wait will be worth it, or is it really the DDR3 support and PCI-E 2.0 that people are hanging out for? Or is it going to be a better overclocker than P35?

Is there any indication as to where these might land in terms of price?

it's the replacement to the 975 chipset, so it will probably be pretty expensive. as far as i know, the biggest feature of X38 is the CrossFire support. that will be the mobo to get if you're interested in that.

you mean SLI support. P35 already supports Xfire.
and yes, its worth the wait.
X38 will OC better than P35, Supports both DDR2 and DDR3, as does P35.
i think the costs will be what the Striker Extreme costs now.
Chiel, i'm pretty sure you're wrong on that. P35 has support for 1x16 PCI-E and 1x4 PCI-E, like the current P965 chipset. this is not true CrossFire.

X38 chipset will support CrossFire for sure - talk about it supporting SLI is just rumor and speculation at this point. the people at nVidia deny this new chipset will support it.

that enough for crossfire.
it isn't native crossfire, and new ATi video cards don't have dongles anymore. the two PCI-E slots can't communicate with each other, so the only video cards you'll be able to crossfire with will be the X1900 and a couple other cards that have CrossFire Master Cards with the dongle. native crossfire is not supported with the P35 chipset.

You're right about that they don't have dongles anymore... but they have bridges like on nVidia's cards.

i'm not gonna make a big bold statement on this because my knowledge of P35 is limited and it's too late for me to go off on a reading spree. i do own a P965 motherboard though, and i know it well. i have 1x16 PCI-E slot and 1x4, just like the P35 boards. i know for a fact that my two PCI-E slots can't communicate with each other, which leaves native crossfire (with the bridge) out of the question. the only way for me to CrossFire on this board is with a master card and a dongle. i can't buy any of the new HD2xxx cards and expect to CF them with this motherboard. i have every reason to believe P35 is the same. search P35 motherboards and you'll see that most of them only have one PCI-E slot anyway.

not really important. twig is probably goint to get some Nvidia card anyway. and it doesnt change the fact the X38 is worth waiting for.
well, i went off and read even though i should be in bed i stand corrected. P35 can do CrossFire. i'd like to thank my European brothers for teaching me something new. pretty funny when you consider i'm the only ATi owner in this thread

...we cannot recommend the P35 at this time for a CrossFire capable system. That honor still belongs to the chipset that refuses to die, the 975X which is slated to be replaced this summer with the new X38 chipset.

the above quote doesn't change the fact that i was wrong. i just wanted to throw it in.
