New Rig: Freezing Issue

Thread Starter
Seeing as it's my first post, I'd like to say hello to everyone.

So, we just put together my buddies computer yesterday. I installed windows with no problems. Once I got into windows, I put the cd in to load the motherboard drivers, it froze. I restarted and tried again. Same thing. After a few tries, it worked and let me install all the drivers. When the computer restarted, I took the CD out thinking I didn't need it in anymore before windows loaded. Anyway, once windows loaded, it froze again. I restarted, and I thought I should check if the drivers ACTUALLY were installed. I thought maybe me taking the CD out messed something up. Anyway, when I looked in Run > MSCONFIG, I didn't see anything in the start up. I remember when I installed the drivers for my own motherboard, I had applications in the startup tab of msconfig. So now, I'm assuming the drivers didn't get installed properly. Also, I checked C: drive to find any Nvidia drivers. Nothing.

This is a weird problem. I've never encountered a new computer freezing. I tried taking a stick of ram out. I tried only leaving one hard drive plugged in. I HAVEN'T tried a different CD-ROM Drive. I have a feeling it's CPU related. I remounted the CPU heatsink just to make sure.

Any ideas? These are the parts we are using. I don't see any compatibility issue. I don't think Windows XP would install properly if there were. I left the computer last night re-installing windows. I don't know if my buddy has made progress. I just thought I would let you guys take a stab at it.

Try clearing the CMOS with the jumper, i was having some issues yesterday when installing XP.

Also take out say the sound card and unplug any USB devices that are not needed for the PC to operate.

I've had problems with Windows freezing on the install before. Try to check the HD to see if its in working order.

It's not an issue with not being able to install windows. The installation went perfectly smooth. It's when the desktop has just loaded. Once I would put the CD in, it would freeze. I'll take what you guys say into account though. Any other thoughts?

Corrupted install's my best guess. If your RAM is faulty it can completely screw installations (found that out the hard way after not being able to install anything for 4 months.)

Run memtest86 in DOS and if it comes up with errors that could be it.

What you could try is putting the windows CD in and running a Windows repair. It may be possible that something is missing and that could be causing your computer to freeze up.

Araknor, I would do a drive read scan on the hd to see if any sectors are bad. Is your HD led solid when the crash occurs?
