Network Gurus needed: I'm helpless, single computer won't connect

Thread Starter
Alright, I've got a wireless network set up through a DSL modem to a Dlink 2XR router. I have it all set up and I have the simple WEP setup on it so that all the computers we own with connect up to it easily. All of them DO connect to it.... except one, my mom's.

I've tried two different PCI wireless cards and neither will connect through firmware updates, driver updates, windows updates EVERYTHING. I'm totally outclassed by this problem.

When I try to connect it will connect but give me the 'little or no connectivity' BS that could be 23478298748947120947 problems. But signal isn't one of them as it has 50%+ signal strength at the card and 90-100% at the router. I reset the log and tried to connect a few million times and came up with this.

PLEASE HELP! I'M NOT AS SMART AS THIS PROBLEM!

does the router have any sort of mac filter?

also do you have any way to test if that computer can get wireless on another network?

what is your moms OS, is it a laptop, how old?

Go to start->settings->network connections, disable all connections but the wireless connection. This includes the fire-wire one too.

might do the trick.

good luck

it keeps saying it dropped packet, i know you said 50% signal strength, but move closer. move away from your current spot as it could be a bad zone from other interference

and what software are you using? are you using windows wireless zero config?
and how many other pc's are connected to the router (TOTAL)?

try connecting to it by hardwire, can you connect to it?

try going to device manager and disable all other network adapters except the one that you are using.

Looks like the router doesn't like the computer.

Maybe the PC had a previous static connection set up?

Make shure the card is set up for DHCP.

First test would be to turn off all security settings. If the machine is already set for DHCP, try setting a static IP. Sometimes the router just decides not to give an IP out. Who knows why...

Okay, it will NOT connect to the neighbor's network either, but it is only like 10-20% versus the 66% that it's currently getting on ours so it's not conclusive.

I've disabled all other connections, no dice.

It's running XP Home 32bit, it's an AMD 3800 I built a year ago.

n00b: I've used the software from linksys, airlink and windows, none work.

NOS--: I have no idea... gotta get on it.

Try WinSockFix: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html

Save to desktop. Open it and let it run, it'll fix your network files/HOSTs files and restore everything back to their fresh state. Reboot when asked.

When you're back in Windows, go Start-->Run, type cmd to bring up Command prompt. At the C:\\ type in "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes, hit enter. Exit. See if these two steps work~
