Hi,

Yesteday morning, i transfered couple videos (divx) that i ripped from dvd to divx format to USB Harddrive, The transfering was successful but when i try to play the video on my friend computer the folder and the videos i've copied from my computer could not be found on the usb harddrive. It did take up the space on the usb harddrive but the files are not there. I had roughly about 4gbs left on this 120gbs harddrive before and after copied couple of the divx videos, its now show 225mbs of free space. and videos does not show on the hard drive please advice me how to find these video files, or recover the space i've lost.

What happend was, i was trying to copy about 5.2gbs of divx files to a 4gbs left of space, when it reached the space available on the usb drive, i got an error msg, i didn't bother to read of what it said, i'm asuming msg alerts was space limitation.

the external usb harddrive is

Western Digital Passport 120gbs
Modle: WD1200U017

I would assume it isn't on the USB harddrive anymore. If you try to copy too much in to something with not enough space it will copy all it can, if it doesn't go on then it will remove any partly copied files.

Can you see any of the files on the USB hard drive from the original computer?

you can't fill up a hdd too much, it needs swap space for moving files. once it gets to a certian point it starts messing up files on it.

Thank guys,

Ok, i bet we all had experienced this before. If we copy more data than the space available, it would only copy upto to that limit and and the rest will not be copied.

in my example, i was trying to copy 5gb data to a 4gb worth of space, so it did copy 3.XX gb of data to 4gb free space, the rest 1.XX gb are not copied and left with 225mbs free of space. this is basically very normal.

say, we want to transfer mp3 files to a 128mbs usb flash drive, average files size is 5mbs, that allows us to copy roughly 25 mp3 songs, but since we selected the total of 30 mp3 songs to be copied, which then require 150mbs usb flash drive to store these mp3's, in this case we are transfering it to 128mbs flash drive, result in 25mp3 will be copied and th other 5 will not. and the 25mp3 song should not corrupted or dissapeared.

I my case it did as described above it did.

---------GOOD NEWS------------

so i did the "chkdsk" command for the usb hdd, now a folder FOUND.001 is found and within that folder there are a couple of *.CHK files, apearently they are my DIVX movie files, i check the file sizes and they match.

Is there any recovering methods needed to be done so these file will not become corrupted? cause, i rename this file to *.DIVX these movies seem to play back quite well, i havn't test to play to whole movie yet so i don't know how it going to turn out.
