what does the error say? Try to load in safe mode (press F8) during start-up.

does it stop before the xp screen loads? Somethign similar happened to my friend aparently he had to reinstall, and for data retreival, its gonna be tough because when it ghappened to him all his data was corrupted. try a regular (non quick format) and install of xp. Also did you plug in any other hard disks at that time?

If you ever get a message after POST saying "NTLDR is missing Press CTRL+ ALT + DEL to restart" then you simply need to boot off your Windows XP installation CD and use the Recovery console to replace the missing files.

You would need to type the following;

copy e:\\i386\
tldr c:\\
copy e:\\i386\
tdetect.com c:\\

Be sure to replace "e" with your correct designated optical drive letter. If this was the problem you were having bear in mind that it is very easy to fix if you ever come across it again. As for overclocking, be sure to lock your PCI bus to 33Mhz from within your motherboard's BIOS next time.

that error only occurs when you have an IDE and a sata, and your putting your os on the sata. Basically what it did to me is wrote the ntldr file to the "c" drive, which was the ide since xp still isn't fully compatible with sata. A good tip: unplug all other drives besides the intended os drive before installing xp.

A bit offtopic:

Actually, it happens quite often with a corrupted installation.

Happened to me once, faulty chipset and too high fsb was to blame

Ontopic:

For that same reason, data corruption can happen when your chipsets are unstable (too fast, or too hot), or even something simple as buggy ram.

try safe mode, and if that doesn't work, loosen your ram timings by 1 point in each clock.
if that doesn't work, reset the cmos
