No, it's not that hard to bend ... it's just a then strip of sheet metal cut into the shape of the mounting arm. If you mess up, it's easy to straighten back ...

And the bend of the arm will only affect the placement of your fan ... which, theoretically could affect your temps depending on how well you have it lined up with the fins ... but it won't affect the contact of your HS base with your CPU in the slightest.

If you take your Zalman apart, you will get a better idea as to what the mounting arm is and does ...
