Terrible performance with C2D/P5K in Crossfire - Page 8

Basically he's saying, drop your multi and run up your FSB higher to get the same CPU speed. That way you're getting more throughput but I give it a 1% chance of having a significant effect on your GFX performance.

EDIT: Oh if you get bored and want to mess around with the cards OCed. Here, I didn't realize how well this thing responds to some MHz. <120MHz core increase/90MHz RAM increase = 50% performance increase.

Almost..he shouldnt have too!...is what I am saying. Just bump up the NB strap in your BIOS. That should raise the NB speed just the same as lowering the CPU multi.

That's certainly NOT how it works with my P965. All it does for me is change ram dividers and mch latencies, what I set my FSB at is what it stays.

<- Hence the reason why it will work for him...he has a P5K-dlx..not a 965!

I know... that's why I mentioned it by name.

LOL I tried setting the NB strap earlier today after work to 266 MHz I believe, which changed my memory divider apparently. In my BIOS it updates the memory freqs in real-time, so it went from DDR833 to something like 1033 or so. I was able to post, but not boot into windows. I increased the VDIMM to 2.3V from 2.25 and loosened the timings to 5-5-5-15, but I didn't change the NB/SB voltage from auto.
I know that an optimal OC is with the highest FSB, and I was running my AMD 3800+X2 at 305 HT with a 9X multi for 2.745 GHz.
I'll play around with it some more later.
Also, it's kinda hard to OC the video cards together, as they're different models. I have one VIVO and one non-VIVO, and one's default clocks are at 620/743, while the other is 635/743.
However, I flashed the BIOS to set the fan speed to %100 on my newer card, and RaBiT changed the core freq to 614 from 620...even though I didn't touch it! I tried so many different settings, compensating for the underclock by OCing that increment above 620 and flashing in DOS....no dice. That was before getting this BIOS so that's not really affecting me that much.
Also, my cards are the turbo, factory OCed ones.

WOW update........I figured that I'd try disabling Crossfire after several completely frustrating rounds of BF2142. Guess what? I got WAY BETTER PERFORMANCE in BF2142!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the Lost Coast bench I only had ~8FPS less (estimate, my screenshot didn't take)
WOW guys this is insane. I mean *** is Intel thinking saying that this chispet supports Crossfire? Maybe this is ATI's fault??? Whomever is to blame, they must die and burn in hell for all of the suffering that I have done in the last few days. I never thought to disable Crossfire, and I haven't ran a single card setup since I got my HDTV monitor that has a native res of 1920*1080.....so I didn't know what to expect.
Needless to say, I'm happy and mad at the same time. I think that I may just sell one of these until Crysis arrives. At that point I guess I'll buy a 2900XT or a 2950XTX...
I'll wait for the next driver set though, as I would like to see if this Crossfire issue is resolved.

Well, it's too early to tell really. Given a few driver updates and there's still a problem, I'd blame Intel. If the updates cure the problem then it's likely ATI.

Hell I dunno man, the games that I play are running fine with 16X HQ AF, 4X quality adaptive AA, everything maxed with 1920*1080....I'm selling one of these and getting a 2900xt in a few weeks.
Of course I'll try them out in Crossfire here in a few weeks, when the new driver arrives. I'll be back in town by then

Sounds like the program has a crappy clock generator..Rivatuner does the same thing..its never exactly dead-on.

*So raising the NB strap increased RAM speed huh? Now, can you lower the RAM speed after you raise the NB, so that the RAM isnt running so fast?
