Messed up hardware acceleration

Thread Starter
My Sound Blaster Live 5.1 doesn't seem to work in some games. It's weird. I have the latest Creative drivers. In Battlefield 2 and 2142, hardware acceleration works and helps with fps and sound quality. But in Counter Strike Source and Dirt, it doesn't work, and in Dirt I lost around 5 fps, but in Source I lose around 60fps when 20 people are shooting simultaneously. What do I do

that doesn't really make any sense to me.

how can you have the latest drivers installed and it not work in the games. i think you probably messed up the settings in the game somewhere.

In Dirt it doesn't let me select Hardware for sound, and in CS:S there are no options to select hardware or software.

The soundblaster live doesn't have an onboard processor so your CPU is doing the processing. All you get over onboard with that card is better quality.

I doubt it's the card causing low FPS.

well if the cpu is doing the processing for sound, when more sound is needed it puts more strain on the cpu, but sound processing is NOTHING to the cpu, so it acutally doens't make any sense.

did you trying using onboard sound. remove the sound card and try onboard sound.

Sound processing IS something to the CPU. Try adding an X-Fi then check BF2 or another big game's FPS.

Some games consider hardware acceleration for sound as hardware mixing. When playing something like Halo PC, I tried the hardware acceleration on my onboard. it worked, and sounded great... until lots of sounds were trying to play at the same time. That caused the more recent sounds to cut off the ones that were already playing. So I use software mixing, since that's easy enough for a CPU, and doesn't cut out on me.

Well yea I had onboard before, and I swear it took more fps away than the soundblaster. So maybe it just helps in processing?

Oh well, I guess I'll deal with playing at medium sound quality.
