Should I OC with this Setup?

Thread Starter
Big-Time newbie here to OC'ing. Athalon 64X2 3800 2.0ghz on a MSI NEO4 Platinum MB. I have just just stock cooling and my temps are about 43 C for Idle and 52 under prime95 load. I would like to take my cpu from 2.0 to only maybe 2.2 or 2.4 Ghz.

1) Do I have enough temp headroom for this small OC?

2) Does anyone here have a similar setup and get me a good start with some settings?

Thanks!

your temps are fine, just keep under 60, be very carefull on stock cooling, if you plan on really getting into overclocking you will want to replace it with some aftermarket cooling

You should be able to get to at least 2.4ghz without increasing the voltage. And the voltage is the main thing that causes heat. SO you should be able to overclock to around 2.4ghz without seeing much increase in temperature. That way you should not have to worry about cooling yet.

My old 3800X2 could get to 2.45ghz on stock voltage and 12+hr prime stable.

Oh, one more question...When testing cpu load and temps. Do I need to run 2 instances of prime95 to fully max out both cores? what is the best procedure to doing the load test?

When I run prime5 now, it looks like both cores share the load at about 50%.
