Good card for VIDEO ONLY

Thread Starter
Ive been researching pricewatch for the last couple of days. I have been looking at a number of cards that would work for what I do. I only watch movies, but I have a lot of them on my hard drive. Do I NEED a card with all that fancy 3D stuff. Everyone keeps telling me to get a 7600GT, but I heard that it might not work too well with my system:

1.8 GIG AMD Athlon CPU
ASUS K7AMA MoBo (no AGP; no PCI-E)
512 MB DDR (might upgrade to a gig or two.)
40 GIG HD for OS
120 GIG HD for Videos/music
Soundblaster 5.1

Personally, I don't need anything as fancy as a 7600. I NEVER play games. I just have problems with my video getting choppy, especially when on full screen. What are my options. Do I go with my gut and get a 128MB card for around $40-$50? Or do I need a crazy 512MB card for $100?

What you need is a new CPU. A graphics card won't help much for FMV.

Awesome username, by the way.

i kind of agree with the post above,

lets say IF (big if because you dont have pci-e) you had a 8800 with your setup, your cpu would be bottle necking your system.

Yes you can still get a good PCI video card what will work with you system well, but in order to get a great video card you should look into a new system

well since you only watch movies and stuff like that, and not a hard core gamer you can make do with your system, yes you can get a 7900 GT.

hey i only play cs-source and starcraft, and do some movie editing on my system, and my 6600 works perfectly well. i can play cs source with average 75 fps. so im good. so a 7900GT will do you well. if you can find it in PCI

How 'bout an 8400 or 2400? They are pretty cheap and really good at video.

Could you reccomend a good CPU/Mobo combo. I tend to hit up pricewatch.com a lot, so if you could post a link, that would help. I have an xp chip right now, and I'm told it works best with XP. But I might go back to 2000 because I liked it so much. Is there a good product that works best with 2000?

BTW, dont recommend me a Core 2 duo, I dont think I need it.

Actually you really don't need anything. You probably just got a virus or something like that slowing down your system.

Currently I'm on a computer with the specs in my sig, running dual monitors. Right now I'm watching a fullscreen 1680X1050 video and typing this at the same time, no lag at all.

The problem is not in your hardware.

EDIT: Also try VLC media player, it seems to work good on slower systems and that's what I am using.

EDIT2: I should also add that it uses 0% cpu but sometimes jumps up to around 10% when a lot of stuff is happening.

well i just took a look on newegg, and i saw there aren't too many good video cards for PCI interface.

and to spend like 50-100 dollars on a video card that costs like 20 bucks in pci-e seems very uneasy for me. so the question is, should you just get a video card for like 60 ish - 80 ish, or get a new mobo and card.

best to get new system but its pointless if you're only doing what you said.

will do you fine.

I'm currently using the on board card. I dunno what it is. I looked through the motherboard book, but I cant seem to find the info.

I guess I'll try using another video program. Is media player notorious for producing choppy video?
