Lapped CPU = dead mobo/RAM ?! - Page 2

No way to test in another rig. Mine is the only one with DDR2, and the only one that is LGA775 in my neighborhood, let alone my house.

I'm guessing it is probably the motherboard. How many times have you closed the lever on the socket with a CPU installed? I heard that socket 775 only tolerates up to 12 installs.

Also as you mentioned it could be the NB. Even though you can't see it, the chip is probably a BGA meaning it's connected with hundreds of tiny balls of solder underneath. It's possible you broke some connections on the NB when you dropped the heatsink on it.

Summay: It's almost surely not the ram, and I'm doubtful it would be the CPU. It's probably the motherboard.
How many times have I closed it? O.o
Erm.
First got my Core 2 Duo.
When my lapped my SI-128.
Today when I lapped my Core 2 Duo.
Today when I was having problems and was thinking something was in the socket (dust, fuzz, etc.)

I know youve probably already checked this but are you sure the mobo is grounded properly?

All my heatsinks that I sand I do dry...for that reason.

Yes it is. That, and the P4 connector were the first things I checked.

I say cpu

I agree that the ram lights wouldn't have been on if the cpu didn't work because they wouldn't be "communicating" with the CPU

Bought it at the 'egg.

Mobo can't be RMAed through Newegg anymore -- they only do mobos for 30 days IIRC -- they won't take it. They told me to contact Asus.

RAM can be.

CPU can't be, but I can buy a cheap Celeron-L or something and just jump to Quad for X-Mas.

why would they not be with the lights on only 1 of them it might be just symbolizing they have power
and if it was the cpu why is it warming up?

The RAM lights up top on Tracers are activity within the RAM. (IE, reading/copying off RAM.) They are not on.

The bottom lights are on when it is getting power through the mobo; "just for looks." They are on.

So, the lights that *could* rule out the RAM are NOT on, and the lights that would rule out the mobo ARE on.

There are so many things pointing at different parts, so I unno.
