WinXP problems with updates...

Thread Starter
So here are the issues (and this is not one of my own computers, but one I'm building for my boss, so don't rely on my sig-rig for any assumptions)... I currently have four updates that Windows Automatic Update has been trying to install, or rather has installed more than once. Essentially, it tells me I have downloaded updates and asks me if I want to install them, I say yes, it "installs" them, then a couple minutes after finishing the installation, it tells me I have updates to install, and guess what? They're the same ones... and this is a repeating pattern so long as I continue to click "yes" to installing them. Problem two is that when I go to the Control Panel, and try to open the Security Center to try and turn off automatic updates, the computer quickly crashes and restarts. That's happened the last three times I've tried it. However its only happened the last three times, and only since I noticed this repeating update installation. The only thing that you should know if that I had a few hiccups earlier today while installing updates, and the computer froze up mid-updating... I let it try and take its time to finish, for at least an hour and a half (thanks to a baseball game), and when I checked back it was on the same update with no mouse movement... had to restart the computer with the reset button... and this happened two separate times during updating.

So what do I do? Seriously, this computer has simply been an evil black box of drama ever since the beginning of the project, but there's no money to fix/replace parts unless it comes out of my own pocket. I've had video card issues up the yin-yang, at least before this last fresh reformat and OS install, and I'm about to test it out again (hopefully with no problems, because that would mean a GPU RMA). But what about the issues up above? Any thoughts on what to do next...?

If it makes a difference, the repeating updates are:
KB890859
KB931784
KB900485
KB920872

Yes, I already tried uploading them from the website, with the same results, but I haven't tried to download each one seperately and install them manually... I'll give that a go and report back later. Thanks for the reply!

I don't have a solution for you to try, but you can disable Automatic Update by:
Start > My Computer > Right click and go into Properties > Automatic Update tab.

EDIT: Oh by the way, whenever I Automatic update and it installs Internet Explorer 7, I lock up.

Was this a recommendation, or a problem you're also having and trying to resolve...?

Listen.

DONT USE WU. Period.

Its pointless really. There's no such UTTERLY CRITICAL (perhaps ONE OR TWO - eg for the gaobot virus) update that you HAVE to get. Or your PC will die.

Thats just what MS wants you to think.

My friend did an experiment with XP SP1 AND SP2 the other day.

HE had a FRESH install - NO additional programs.
And got ALLLLLLL the freakin updates up there.

You know what happened? - our suspicions were confirmed.
THE PC MOVED LIKE CRAPPP.
sooo waxy. (slow).

Dont use Windows update man.

Get a good Firewall, and Antivirus, and learn how to protect your computer otherwise (services to disable ect) and you'll be FINE.

Well until this little situation I've never had a problem with windows update or anything like that, so I wouldn't think it to harm the computer. And if this wasn't for someone else, I might not care so much, but its not mine, and its using some "older" parts, so I'm just trying to get it as stable as possible, yet as OCed as possible at the same time, and out of my hands. I figured getting all the updates would help with future stability when new programs are installed and whatnot, but I'm no guru of building computers. I know what I'm doing, for the most part, but at the same time I'm no guru... I mean obviously there are a few updates that need to be made here and there, but maybe not all of them...

Anyways, I appreciate the help and input, but alas this problem isn't even my biggest concern right now, as I've had issues with the video workings in the system, and thats the more pressing and confusing issue right now (which I previously started a different thread about). Either way I appreciate your help though!
