PS2 only reads PS1 games

Thread Starter
My room mates bud said I can have his ps2 for $30 if I can fix it. I tried one of my ps1 games on it and it boots every time. It won't load dvd's or the ps2 game I bought today. He said that it won't read discs but it reads the ps1 game I put in there without a hitch.

anyone know whats up?

Messed up laser? A lot of PS2's had that problem of a laser that either did not read their games or sratched their discs. I've never heard of one only playing Play Station 1 games though, lol.

try cleaning out the inside and clean the lens. That should fix the problem, if not the lens is done which happens to all sony lens after time.

Well, assuming your theory is correct - what would I do to correct the problem? I'll try another ps1 game but they said they haven't gotten a ps2 game to work on it. I know it worked for a while but just stopped from what the guy said.

edit: OK. is there a guide I can use to clean the ps2 inside without breaking it? I'm hoping I can use products I have laying around the house to fix it.

Also, can you link me to where I could buy a new laser for cheap if it is done for?

well, you can first open the PS2. Next make sure you slowly put the top to the side because there is a ribbon wire that goes to the reset and open button. A pain in the ass to put back on if you ask me. Next you will need a very small screw driver to unscrew the top of the disk drive. Once that is open take a que-tip and put rubbing alchohol on it. dry it w/ tissue paper and reassemble. Do this carefully, bad things can happen. Should work.

Edit - You can't buy a new laser.

Ouch. Well, I'll give that a try when I get a chance to sit down and tinker with it when I'm not about to pass out. Thanks as always oc.net, never fail me when I have a quick question.

Open up the PS2 and the drive. There's a small white gear-looking thing at the back of the drive with a metal tab. Turn it a few notches. Test. Turn a few more. Find where it starts working best.

I've fixed several PS2's with the same issue. The gear adjusts the alignment and focus of the laser, moving it closer and farther away.

Try using a PS2 CD-based game. Blue bottom.

And the way I test the PS2 with the drive open, is pop out the plastic ring from the drive lid (it's flexible) and sit it on top of the disc. The magnet will hold it down.

If the PS2 makes an almost grinding sound when speeding up and slowing down the CD, it's a completely different problem.

PS1 games = easier to read.
Your laser is on the way out.

Do what KloroFormd said to do, and clean the lens with a q-tip / alcohol.

I'll try cleaning first and then trying to comprehend Kloro's instructions.
