Turn this gear.

It's also a good idea to mark the current position.

going by this guide "http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/features/45797/PlayStation_2_Disc_Read_Error_Fix.html"

I've been trying to clean it. there are two screws on the drive and the right one came out simply by turning it to the right (...) and when I screw it back in I can keep screwing left and it'll keep spinning. The screw on the left on the other hand will NOT budge no matter what. I cannot get it to screw left or right. I think it has too much tension from the screw on the right being stripped or not doing its job right because I've tried brute force and it will not work.

any ideas on how to get that screw to budge?

OK. problem. I got the cover off and what not, but I don't have a white gear directly above the laser. I have two smaller white gears located on each side of the tray though...

That does indeed look strange. I know its obvious from the picture but can you not find one large white cog at the rear end furthest from the Spindle ?

Ive not seen that design before. What modle is your PS2. Look at the back of it and you should find a model number beginning ''SCPH****''.

I wouldnt want to yet advise you to turn these 2 white gears.

also, when I was taking the cover off I didnt have to worry about the wires connecting to the power on button. so I have the cover right here and the # reads "SCPH-50001"

My friend's room mate got it at a pawn shop for $80 and it was doing the DRE thing, if I can fix it its mine for $30...
