i know that buddy - the person i was replying to seemed to be implying that this technology depended on a new type of laser -- while they may be using a laser with a smaller wavelength-- the real isse is that they are using two lasers to encode info on the disc holographically.

Why aren't they using this for hard drives?
Well, for one: it's permanent storage?

And writing to it has to take a hell of a lot of time
for that matter.

As for compression methods:
H.264 + 500GB = entire set of Star Wars in DigiCinema 4K format + special features.
