Choosing an AM2 mobo... - Page 2

Oh I meant I had already "chosen" it, but I haven't bought it or anything. Heh, I shouldn't have been so vague. I'm gonna be pairing whatever board I get up with an X2 4600+. I'm hoping to take it to 2.8 or 3Ghz, but I'm not sure how feasible that is. I'm really new to AMD overclocking.

So far I'm torn between the M2N-E and the Biostar 550. The DFI board and the other ASUS board are quite a bit out of my range. I also don't think I'll be getting an ATI card, so a Crossfire board would kind of be a waste.

How is Biostar for providing support on their boards? This is something ASUS has always been awesome with. I don't want to leave ASUS for a company that isn't going to give me the same treatment.

So far the only real setback the Biostar board has is that I will have to order it online. My local store doesn't do Biostar

Not as well as the others though.. there are limited voltage options in some cases but I haven't had the need to overclock yet, so i wouldn't know..

I would recommend it though. Worked flawlessly so far.
Not to get off topic, but in your system profile you say you have an am2 x2 4400 (2 x 1mb)? I believe that these have only 512kb x 2 if i'm not mistaken?

Yes, that actually confused me and made me go check. It is actually 512kb x 2.

why not get the 3600+ X2 instead of the more expensive 4600+ and have 65nm and overclock just as good?

*shrugs* I honestly just randomly picked it. I know almost nothing about AMD CPU's these days.

No doubt your best price/performance right now is X2. It's an AMD buyer's market.

If you have the money you should go with a 5200+ Windsor or a 5000+ Brisbane ($130 and $119 on Newegg right now). The Brisbane core is on a 65nm process like most Core 2 Duo, Windsor is 90nm, in case you didn't know, smaller is better (for overclocking and temperatures).

I bought my X2 3800+ for $153 less than a year ago, so it's obvious you're getting a really good deal on those two. You can go lower and lower in terms of price on an X2 (I would try to stick to the Brisbane-based CPUs), but once you get to 3800+ and 4200+, you might want to think about getting a better motherboard than something like an M2N-E, because you're going to have to overclock to keep up with the latest games.

Thanks for the advice. I shall keep it in mind if I still choose to do AMD (I say this because I just learned of Intel price drops this month which should bring the E6600 a little more into my range). I would prefer not to have to overclock just to stay ahead... I enjoy starting with a fairly fast CPU and building on it. So I think the 5000+ or 5200+ would be a better idea for me.
