New build, some help please!

Thread Starter
Hey there,

I'm new to OCN so here's my greeting: Hello

Anyways.. Onto the real issue.

I'm buying some new components to build a new PC but using some of my old parts like my HDDs
and my RAM. The new parts will be updating some of my old ones in the goal to give it some kick.
Here's the list:

Monitor: Samsung 226BW SyncMaster (2 ms) 22" TFT monitor
Case: RaidMAX Sagitta Case with 500W PSU (Black)
Motherboard: Asrock 4COREDUAL-VSTA LGA775, DDR2, SATA, Lan, 7.1Snd, ATX
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Socket 775 2.4GHz
GPU: 768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX PCI-Express VGA Card
RAM: Kingston ValueRAM 1024Mb DDR2 800MHz Memory

I already own a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Music soundcard and 2x150GB Int. HDD (Decent RPM),
a 500GB Ext. HDD, DVD ROM and DVD R/RW, a Floppy Drive, and 2x512mb or Kingston RAM. The PC was
originally a DELL product, but as you see I'm planning on making something new with bits of old.

My main concern is firstly: Will it all be compatible? (Any issues I don't seem to know about?)

Second: Does the Intel C2D E6600 work with the MB? (What I found was "Yes", confirmation would be nice.)

Thirdly: Are there any good/similarly priced MBs that have SLI support? (2 slots for GPUs that work together??)
Because I may want to buy another GPU later on so I can run them together in SLI and the MotherBoard I have chosen doesn't have 2 slots for GPUs..

Thanks alot for any efforts,
I'm new to building PCs and all I know is from research.

Raener / Rhythms.

Welcome. Don't waste your money on that psu. Go with a single rail design that can provide as many amps as possible on that rail (I see that you are going for the case/psu combo - it just doesn't usually work out). You want to sli in the future so juice is a major concern.

Also, I would reconsider the main board. 1 agp and 1 pci-e does not equal sli. Im also not sure about the bios options available on that one (yes, it appears your c2d works here).

Don't go with a valueram option because you will be very limited on how hard you may push the rest of your components. Ram has gotten cheaper, reconsider.

Processor - if you can wait two more weeks or so until the 22nd of the month, you can get it for less.

Good luck on your build!

Why are you going with the ASRock 4CoreDual-Vsta? It's only real purpose is that is has DDR and DDR2 as well as AGP and PCI-E 4x, so it helps you "transition" your older parts. By the way, I'm using one right now. And it runs all Dual Core and even first gen Quad cores. The rest looks ok, but 1GB of Ram is pretty weak, you might as well go with a 2GB (1024 x 2)kit if you could swing it. And the ASUS P5N-E SLI is a nice overclocking motherboard and priced descently, well, so I hear from this site anyway.
Well first off, you don't want to get a high end CPU and buy a low end Mobo

That mobo will not OC the E6600 to its full potential.

I advise atleast getting a Gigabyte DS3 for £70 and cut down on the CPU to an E6300. That way you will get a healthy OC and a decent CPU

Also, that RAM is no good at all and will hold the OC back aswell. You can pick upsome

Crucial £80

I cannot stress enough how well the money will be spent if you atleast upgrade to these parts If you cannot afford them then fair enough.

Also i see no PSU??? Except for that one that comes with the case. I will say this for you

that psu will NOT power that 8800GTX and WILL more than likely kill your WHOLE system

That is not an over exageration. Before you even think about building a high end system you need a decent PSU to back it up

If you need recommendations just ask us.

Also what is your overall budget? Alot of people are good at building systems here and can build you a system that is alot more neutral than the one you did.

I appreciate all your help guys, I'll be reconsidering my RAM to IcedEarth's suggestion..

The GIGABYTE DS3 doesn't seem to support GFX cards to run in SLI so I have found
GigaByte P35-DQ6 LGA775, DDR2, SATA2, GBLan, ATX that seems to support it
(2 x PCIe x16, 3 x PCIe x1) Correct me if I'm wrong. I want to stick with the E6600 as
unless there is something that would give an advantage using the E6300.

..And about the PSU 500W not cutting the power needed for the 8800, what do you
suggest? Links please. (bearing in mind I may have 2x8800's in SLI, futurewise)

My budget is around £1000 (roughly $2000).
I'm aiming to build a PC good for both gaming and Graphic work and design etc.

I said I'm new to building and some of the technical terms so if you think something
could be explained more simply, please do.

Thanks in advance,

Raener / Rhythms

That DQ^ doesn't actually support SLI,it supports crossfire, it has 1x16pcie and 1x4pcie, if you could just wait till X38 chipsets comes out or grab a 680i mb if you're wanting SLI.
If you can swing it this mb is pretty good http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/prod...BG-N680SLI-DQ6 or grab this , not sure how it oc's but it has the SLI http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/prod...BG-N650SLI-DS4

And about the psu, pay attention to the amperage on the +12v rail/rails, you want at least 30+ amps on the +12v rail combined. I'm not sure about and UK sites but if you can find maybe the Corsair HX520 or preferably the HX620. Those would work nicely.

My current PC build:
(I considered one of the MBs that rx7racer found to support SLI
not to far off my original MB's price!) Thanks

Monitor: Samsung 226BW SyncMaster (2 ms) 22" TFT monitor
Case: RaidMAX Sagitta Case with 500W PSU (Black) << Possible change of case (Without PSU)
Motherboard:GigaByte N650SLI-DS4 S775, DDR2, SATA2, GBlan, 8Snd, ATX << UPDATE

GPU: 768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX PCI-Express VGA Card
RAM: Crucial 2GB Kit (1GBx2) Ballistix Memory DDR2 800MHz Memory

How are things looking?

Still would like to know what PSU I should be getting
if I'm gonna run a NVIDIA 8800 GTX, possibly in SLI in
the future.

Well yes that actually looks like an awesome system

For a PSU look into some of these.

OCZ GXS 700W £77

Silverstone Decathlon 750W £109

Silverstone Zeus 750W £126

Corsair 620W HX £94

There are alot more out there. Shame i can't find a E-tailer that carries PC P & C
