Wiring a Fan Through USB. How/Can it be done?

How would one go about wiring a fan into a USB cable to power it?

I love playing with fans, and want to wire one with USB so i can use it with my xbox 360 and my PC

Anyone got any technical information on the cables inside USB cord. And would this be a bad idea, like drawing too much power through a USB port and damaging the motherboard / xbox 360?

Thx for any info!

USB only provides 5v and most fans run at 12v. It would be very difficult to manage this. Some fans might spin with 5v, but I think the amperage draw would be too much.

USB = 5v...it'd be pretty badly undervolted...some fans won't even turn at that.

*edit*
Gah. Too late. >_<

Hmmm i see...

Well i do have some very small fans, maybe those would run at 5v. It's worth a shot i guess, don't you think?

Now i just need to know what to wire where...

Red wire is +5v, black wire is Ground. The red is pin one, on the left, and black is pin 4 on the right if you are looking at the wire with the pins at the top of the connector, here is a picture:

Also, generally speaking the USB output is limited to 100mA on most motherbards and hubs, some powered hubs can have 500mA output, but I would make sure the fan you use is rated at less than 100mA so you don't burn out your mobo.
