CPU power will be needed for processing... DDR3 won't be noticed vs DDR2... grab a good soundcard or a few... and go with some real software...

how hardcore is he? will he need more then 4 channels? more then 10?

does he drool when seeing this picture?

Yeah because Xeon 5xxx CPU's / Intel Chipset / PCI-Express / Serial-ATA / Firewire 800 / USB 2.0 / Gigabit Ethernet is so propriatery.

And limited to a small percent of software? Let's see ...
It can run :
Mac OS X
Linux
Windows (pick a version)

I don't know about you but I think your PC is more limited in software choice than the Mac's actually...

He would have access to every PC apps he want PLUS the sweet sweet Logic Express / Logic Pro
http://www.apple.com/logicexpress/
http://www.apple.com/logicpro/

Since you like to post products ill post a few too, yest hey are all PC and Mac compatible BTW:

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/NRV10-main.html

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.list&ID=dj

This is 34 In - 36 Out. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_u...idge-main.html

Look at this video: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=...519cdee27a03c6

Yes you are right the Mac is SOOOOOOO limited...

For DJ type gear, M-Audio is the way to go. Pretty much any of these will do the trick for your friend depending on how much gear he wants to plug into his computer: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=...=pciinterfaces

Just make sure that he gets something with RCA, 1/4inch, and/or MIDI connectors (whichever his mixing equipment uses - I've seen all 3 used on different mixers) so that he can hook his mixer straight in without any funky adaptors.

If he happens to want something portable, they make USB/Firewire devices as well: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=...bileinterfaces

As others have mentioned, video editing is surprisingly not GPU dependant. Go much lighter on the video card unless he wants to play games (I'd say even as low as a 7x00 or 6800 Nvidia card or x1600 ATI card should be fine) and spend the money on CPU and sound. I'd also suggest 2gb of ram as well.

I've found http://forum.videohelp.com/ helpful for random video questions.

As for the pro gear, I'd say he can't go wrong with a pair of Technics (SL1200Mk2 or Mk5), an Allen&Heath mixer (Xone 464 if he's got the money or a Xone 32), and a pair of Mackie HR824 studio monitors.

correct a 3600+ am2 cpu should be more than enough for music. And 2gb of ram should be more than enough. I would recomend a board with multiple pci slots if he wants 16ch midi inputs. Or he can get the allen & heath mixer that has usb out, or equivilant.

show me a MAC compatible video card... other then the what... uh 3 options on apple.com

show me a pci slot... Not PCI-Express...

show me a bleeding edge apple system that isn't way OVER-PRICED

i can run Mac OS on a PC... by making a few adjustments for the proprietary Mac OS... -- or i can run every other OS on a mac with a little help from apple to deal with their proprietary hardware model...

The mac is pretty... and well designed... but it's not the best solution...

I'll wait for Apple to release their OS for the standard PC platform... then i'll say get MacOS and a PC...

I tought we established the video card wouldn't mather for a musician. If you games then just run Windows on the Mac with boot camp, then any PCI-E video card work as long as you keep the little 7300 too. And if you want to play games you will run windows anyway.

Show me a bleeding edge dual Xeon (Quad or Octo-core) PC system which accept 16GB of ram. That is way cheaper than the Mac Pro. Of course don't buy extras like hard drives and memory from apple but from a third party...

Why would we need a PCI Slot anymore realy? A sound card? Firewire I/O boxes are replacing obsolete cards in the Pro audio anyway. And in Non-Pro world the on-board sound hardware is more than enough.

Unless of course you want to go with 15,000$ DSP Solution from Digidesign butt hen again they are available in PCI-E form too... http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...00&itemid=4888

Good luck running the hacked MacOS X on something other than specifc motherboards without a lot of kernel panics...

Stop posting! You're making too much sense! Gah it might actually make sense to get an industry standard piece of hardware that will work better for music then any PC!!!11111
