Gaming graphics cards... which to choose?? - Page 4

post #31 of 57
check this out. Sapphire X1950XT 256mb gddr3 for 149$ after MIR . it would beat the 7950gt easily and costs less. Since you're not planning on vista yet, it is PERFECT for you. great for oblivion since you can use max AA AND HDR at the same time (nvidias cant do it).

plus by the time SP1 for vista comes out in a year or so, you will be ready to sell it, most likely without a significant loss to buy a DX10 card, which will ALSO be cheaper then.

@Nevaziah: Uhm... we've already talked about that card. Right now, I'm comparing it to an EVGA one and seeing what everyone's opinions are. I"ll just re-post the link.

EVGA GeForce 8600GTS

I found out that the card on NewEgg isn't the original 8600GTS, but rather the Superclocked version, which has faster clock speeds. Surprisingly, the Superlocked is around the same price as the MSRP on the regular. Funny how prices for things online can be so much cheaper... *ahem* anyway, as sated, the 8600GTS has 32 Pixel Pipelines, which is unstated on the specs sheet.

Look at Theese reviews

Hexus 8600gts review
Hardware zone review

The 8600gts is beat in most games used for benchmarking by the 7900gs and the x1950pro. With no AA or AF turned on the fps reads make me worry a bit too (35-40)

I had the SAME choice you are making now, and I am telling you right now, please dont go for the 8600gts. Even if it's to get DX10 support,Look at the weak FPS on DX10 games by the 8800 and HD2900 series on DX10, so imagine how bad it will be on a 8600gt.

The only thing that makes sense from a budget point of view is either getting an 8800gts or a High end DX9 card(7900gt or above or x1900xt or above) since you're not even planning on getting vista soon.

8600gts = 180$
8800gts = 249$ after MIR
X1950XT = 149$
7900gs = 159$
7900gt = 180$

Price performance wise, if you're planning to go DX10, it doesnt make sense unless you plan to sell your 8600gts in about half a year. because you wont be able to play DX10 with all the eye candy on, heck the X600 line cant do it on DX9 effectively.

just my 2 cents...

EDIT: but if you still want to, here's a better deal on the GTS. 149$ on the egg!!!

Spend a little more money and get a 320MB 8800GTS. It performs about 3x better in most games..

ya the 7900gs beats most all 8600 cards both the 7900gs and 8600gt/gts can overclock great. I score 6681 with my card overclocked on 3dmark 06 and i saw someone here with a 8600 running 200-300mhz faster then me with a c2d and only scored 200 points higher.

It's definately either the x1950xt or the 6800GTS. I'm maxing out at $200. I refuse to spend any more than that. I've been nickel-and-diming my way up the graphics cards. The original one I had in mind was a nice budget gaming card that was around $100, and now I'm spending double. So, I'm setting the limit there.

And, from what Nevaziah said, I'm definately leaning more towards the x1950xt now. Just gotta check out those reviews. And, well, the x1950xt seems to have been the concensus opinion over the last three pages anyway...

Considering your budget is under $200, read some reviews and don't go by clock speeds or pipelines for different cards, there are far too many variables.

The 8600 series is pathetic, sorry guys but the last two x600GT cards smoked everything from the previous generation and at a much lower price point. Plus $250 for a card that gets smoked by cards for 50-100$ less? thats just sad. Please don't bring up 3dmark, that benchmark no longer is valid.

You will be better off (as much as it pains me to say this) with the 1950, it should serve you well until powerful directx10 video cards come out.

Has this actually happened before? I wasnt in modding or active when DX9 came in but it seems things like this repeat themselves every generation. (athlon vs P4, athlon vs conroe etc...) the PROBLEM is that we dont have an alternative! ATI's got nothing so Nvidia is free to set their prices as they see fit on the 8800GTS and JUICE every last cent out of us.
(Example the 7900gt performing less than the X1900XT, it still did cost MORE.)

I think the x1950xt is the best option at present. It'll last you for some time too. The only downer I think is that the cooler (if it's anything like the x1900/x1800 series) will be loud!
Still it does a good job in cooling.

yes, most unfortunate, It was hoped that the 8800GTS would have been released the 8600GT, but alas it was not to be. Probably would have cost too much, but we can still dream.
