Surround Sound at your desk...

Ive heard and read many people talk about using 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound at their desk. My question to those of you that do is, how do you accomplish this?

Sounds like an easy enough question but to me my thinking is; the only practical way to use surround sound at your desktop is to use 5.1 headphones. But sales for 5.1 surround speaker sets are rampant. How is it that manufacturers figure this is practical.

The only time Ive seen in in real life is when a friend of mine had a surround set, yet the kicker is that he had all of the speakers on his desk forward facing him. What kind of surround sound is that?

My other point of view is this. What if you have your computer in a living room or den. I just dont find it practical to go wall or ceiling mounting my surround sound for my desktop in a room where I entertain guests or whatever. I really wouldnt even want to do this in my room.

So what are these manufacturers intentions when they sell a surround set with no practical means of getting your speakers where they need to be in a typical 5.1 setup?

The only practical way that I have ever seen to mount 5.1 at your desk was for a retail display of a 5.1 bose surround way back in 1996. You could walk up to this relatively small display and they had these relatively small bars that would smoothly bend from behind the display up and over behind your head for the rear speakers. However, I have not been able to find a mounting system like this for your desktop anywhere.

Understand that its that 5.1 at your desk is only a problem for the rear speakers. I guess everything else would be just fine.

So... Give me your ideas and maybe some of the things you guys have come up with for this little problem. Please... no ideas that involve duct tape... =)

Im lucky, my desk is in a cubby hole in the living room. Ive got the sub under the desk, fronts and center on the desk and the rears mounted on the wall directly behind my chair 5 inches from my head. PERFECT surround sound.

Or wall mounts.

I have my PC and home theater set up in the same room. My HT rear speakers are to either side of my PC desk and my PC rears are on either side of my entertainment center.

I've got 5.1 speakers and 5.1 headphones. I tend to use the headphones much more as it's more personal and doesn't disturb other members of the family/household.
The 5.1 sound is not perfect and it usually depends on the source but it's good enough.

I use Trust 751b headphones and z640 speakers.

speaker stand
custom or self made ($12.5 each)

beside, some speakers won't utilize all 5 speakers for music playback like CD or MP3, so u have to do a bit of research.
i made mine work with full surround(not copy mode) for CD and MP3 playback using Foobar.

I have mine set up with the rear on the outerside and the fronts closer to my monitor. I can tell when somethings "behind" me, but I've gotta mount em on my wall. My room is in the shape of an L with my computer being in the little bottom part so I have a wall behind me to mount them.

i have Dell 5.1 speakers and a Dell monitor. my monitor has a mount underneath it for the center channel speaker - it clips right onto my monitor. i have my front satellite speakers directly on either side of my monitor, right in front of me. the rear speakers are really just further out on the edges of my desk.

it isn't true surround, but i never sit at my desk and watch movies anyway. for music, i have 5 sources of sound all pointing at me and it sounds a lot richer than just having 2 speakers imo. for gaming, the rear sounds might not actually be coming from behind me, but i can tell when the sound is supposed to be from behind. know what i mean? i can always tell where people are by the sounds they make. i usually game with my headphones anyway.
