Agreed, the state of movie->game conversions is horrible. I thought things would look up after the Riddick game, but alas!
LOL. you just named two games with some of the best graphics around...I don't get your point. yes, they're both good...but not "regardless of bad graphics..." cause they both look amazing.

I do agree, though...HL2 was the most amazing FPS to come out of anywhere since the beginning...though Wolfenstein 3d (at it's time) would probably rival it...lol

HL 2 - one of the best graphics around? LOL. I'll admit they don't look bad, but they don't look good by any means. Any modern game far exceed its graphics. (I'm talking of what's in HL 2+episodic content and not its countless mods, etc).

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. had some extremely crappy textures. While some of were very good, some were just atrocious (the plant life). In most cases it wouldn't matter, the problem is that using trees as cover is a requirement. Then there are the gun models and occasionally jarring animation.

The game had a great sense of immersion in the game atmosphere, but as a graphical show piece it was lacking.

Btw, I loved the game - I just didn't think the graphics were anything great.

Wolf 3d / Doom = teh greatness.

hang on, how would shorter games be less boring....

im bored at the moment, because i have no new games to play as they are all too damn short

DiRT... well took me 3 days but lots of that time was spend messing about trying to get fastest times in the world

FEAR took me 8 hours first time through

its shocking really, they need to be making games longer e.g GTR2, ive played 227 hours of that, and while a lot of that has been races which don't go towards completing it, its still a really long game.

EA don't know what they are on about

I hardly think the majority of the people who posted on this thread could be considered a "casual" gamer. Casual gamers don't play a game, any game, for hours & hours on end.

Also, if a game seems short to you, it doesn't mean it will seem that way to others. Just because you can beat any game on any level (or can pwn many'a'n00bs) doesn't mean others will be able to, especially "casual" gamers. Just my opinion, though.

Isn't that why the Wii has done so well? It doesn't alienate anyone who wants to play, young or old. I bet my cat could play it, if I wanted to train her.

One thing that strikes me about HL2 is even though it is an FPS, it manages to avoid being overly repititous.

(For example, I like FEAR, but I had to force myself through to the end. You can only shoot so many of those soldiers in gray cinderblock buildings before you get tired of it.)

Think about it, each level has a different theme to it, even though it's still 90% shooting. On one level you are avoiding walking on the sand to avoid ant lions, the next, you are using the antlions as your personal hit squad. The boat level, the driving level, ravenholm, the prison. Each level brings something different to the table and that is the real genious of HL2, IMO.

I think ValvE could easily crank out reams of levels for HL2, but what they do, and do really well, is craft a different experience each time you hit a load screen. Gawd bless 'em. I wish more companies would follow their lead.
