I can tell you that if you search, you'll find a howto. For Ati cards, you need an xgl session to do beryl and the visual things.

Yes.. I kept having problems as it couldn't find the file lol. I solved that in the end although i forgot how lol.

About the Desktop effects thing... I found out I have to use something called XGL to make it work, (as the close-source can't work with the composite extension apparently), what is that? I really want to get this working so if anyone has got it working on their X1900 cards let me know how
I think you have to disable compositing with Ati cards.

The easiest way for the ATI driver is just to go to the Proprietary Drivers option than check off ATI. Then completely restart your computer.

Do you mean on the restricted drivers manager? Sorry i'm still a noob at this lol. Or do you mean on one of the text file things.

I couldn't find a guide using Overclock.net search but i've found some on Google so no worries.

For the record, this is the 5th or 6th time since yesterday I'm learning something important every time i mess up though lol. This time i'll take the XGL route.

K, well i'm bored of Ubuntu now, I know how do virtually anything on it (or where to find out). Could never get beryl to work because one of the files i need to download is missing lol. What is the next step up that has even more functionality but isn't a complete pain to set up?

Try other distros. OpenSuse is nice and I really like it (the easiest time I had while working with ATI cards). Debian is cool too (make sure to get the unstable releases). Mandriva is also a good one (big repositories too).
