I don't think I've mentioned this before, but this is a good jumping off point for me to say it: Given how hard Sony tries to push its proprietary formats (Blu-Ray, UMD, MiniDisc, etc.), I am very surprised that they allow standard hard drives to plug into the PS3. Kudos for that decision.

I suppose thats because they've already got the distributors/whole sale connections due to Viao laptops using 2.5" drives though.

OK... it's been a couple of weeks since Sony's price drop on the PS3 (and very early claims of PS3 dominance in the marketplace: "Sales up 2800%!!"

Well, now the dust had settled and nothing much is really happening. Sure a few more people are buying PS3's at the new lower price (who wouldn't) but the current increase in sales is only about 135%:

Sales of PlayStation 3 jump-started 135 percent since price cut

In response to the latest console hardware sales numbers reported by NPD Group, Sony contacted DailyTech and other media with its own internal data on PlayStation 3 sales.

According to Sony’s data, PS3 sales have increased by more than 135 percent at the company's top five retailers since the new $499 price was announced two weeks ago on July 9.

The surge in PS3 sales helped to send total PlayStation hardware up 161 percent, software up 15 percent and peripherals by 60 percent.

"The new price on the 60 GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA.

Tretton continued by outlining the upcoming lineup of promising PS3 software: "This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80 GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk. That will be followed by Heavenly Sword in September and six more exclusive first-party PS3 games in October, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction."

Overall console sales in June saw an increase across the board for all systems. PS3 sales were up 21 percent over May's figures, with 98,469 units sold at retail. Furthermore, PSP was up 31 percent year-over-year, selling 290,108 units at retail, while PlayStation 2 once again remained one of the best-selling consoles on the market, with unit sales of 270,763 for the month, up an impressive 44 percent from May.

By no means am I bashing Sony and the PS3, I'm just tellin' it like it is.

Gotta agree with you there. the ps3's product life cycle doesn't sound too promising at the moment.

If you look at the whole growth/maturity/saturation/decline it would suggest that the ps3 is about at the saturation stage, and the price cuts are to keep sales up.

even if you disagree you have to admit that it has had one strange life up to now, and id like to see some sales/price graphs since release.

But hey, sony probably knew it would be like this, knowing that only the big fans would buy the console until it became more accessible to people who own ps2's (practically everyone). £425 is a lot of money to spend on a present for a 12 year old, while £180 for a wii is very acceptable, and thats why the wii has sold so many.(360 is sort of in between)

Saturation already? It hasn't even been out a year yet. I don't think any of the consoles are at saturation yet.

Even analysts agree that the PS3 is ahead of it's time. So is the 360 in some regards. I'd hardly say it's lifecycle isn't promising. The PS3 is gonna be around for a long time. It's just getting started.

I don't really think that we're at the saturation point... yet. But as far as I've heard, the reason for the price drop is to clear all of the 60Gb versions to make way for the 80Gb versions. (I forget where, but I heard that the President of Sony Europe mentioned a 120Gb version of the PS3 sometime in 2008).

I am unsure whether or not Sony will bump the price back up when the 80Gb units go on sale or if they'll keep the price @ $500.

I heard that too, but lets face it, only people like us think ooohh 60gb more capacity, now its worth the dough.

In my opinion, the current gen of consoles (excluding the wii) are too mature, aimed at mature audiences, with mature games and take some of the emphasis off fun.
The people who would appreciate the new capacity already have ps3's, while the giant market of kids and people who just want to play games who bought a ps2 2-3 years ago head straight to the wii because its fun and cheap.
Thats why i believe that neither the ps3 or 360 will ever be as big as the ps2 was, because the wii has grabbed the largest market.
enthusiasts and rich kids only make up a small segment
