CPU bottlenecking 8800 GTS?

Thread Starter
My computer specs are below. Currently when I play CS:S or BF2 at the same resolution and detail my games play before I get the same FPS if not a 10-20 fps increase.

Before I go and buy out a new CPU is it the cause? Can anyone suggest any tips?

It might be your CPU mostly or your memory.Try getting another 1 gig to have 2gigs of ram and it wont have lag.A AMD Athlon X2 Dual core would give you a major boost.Thats if you have AM2 socket.

Source games are quite CPU dependent. To put more load on the GPU, max out your resolution, and AA/AF values.

Overclocking your CPU, or getting a cheap X2 processor would help with the bottlenecking quite a bit.

I jumped from a 3500+ @ 2.45ghz, to an X2 3800 @ 2.5ghz and the performance increase is quite prominent.

Yes its your cpu. I get that score with my 8600gt....much less powerful than your GPU.

Thats kinda low...did you remove your pevious drivers, run a driver cleaner, then install your new drivers?

I'm thinking that it could be a power supply issue. What are your 12v rails like?

Yeah that's going to be quite a bottleneck there with that single core athlon. Unless you notice it affecting the gameplay though, you really don't need to do much. If you want to unlock the full power of that 8800 I recommend you get a C2D and overclock it. At 3.5ghz I was able to get 300 fps in the stress test on highest quality, 16Xaa/af, 1680x1050. With my X2 dual core overclocked I got roughly half that.

with that cpu upgrade your probably going to see atleast a 2000k increase give or take.

Anyone 2nd that?

An X2 will definitely help, but a C2D will show more of an improvement.
