DICE Containers - Demensions? - Page 2

@CD: Actually, I have plans drawn up for a solid container made out of aluminum at first, for the ;earning process. Then on to copper we go Only problem is, I do not know to much about thermal conductivity and how much surface area will be sufficient.

@DD, You think a radius of 3.25-3.5 would fit?

If you mean Diameter it seems so. The Diagonal is the diameter.

Errr....yes, the diameter around

Good, I think I'll take my mobo out of my case tonight with a rolled up piece of paper to test some different diameters. It just sucks because it's the only LGA775 mobo I have.

Well if you look at the Diagonal from DD that will tell you how big around it can be period--no need for that removal stuff.

Obviously the plate can be larger than the holes (has to be ) but depending on what sticks up on the mobo near the sockey you may need to constrain it from being alot larger.

imagine a plat 4.25" squar whatever thickness with a series of rods abnout 3" long welded to it and then a tube that is welded to the base and contains the rods...the rods will add conductivity and surface area for the DICE. If you use a 4" diameter pipe and a 4.25" square base you should have about the maximum size for the unit.

Hmmm....I know exactly what your getting at, but I was hoping to stay away from a brazed unit.....although it sounds enticing the way you put it....

Do you have a lot of experience with thermal conductivity?

No. Just from researching it. If you look at several of the DICErs they have tried different things to maximize the event...as DICE subliminates pretty fast and is not super cold like LN2.

Rods insid eth tub that connect to thebase are in theory supposed to draw heat from the base--something like the pins used in some WBs on a large scale...I imagine there is a formula and a theory to apply that would suggest the ideal diameter and length of pin. It seems to me that after a certain length the pin would not conduct anymore heat than say a shorter pin of the same diameter--up to a certain point. My guesstimate was 3" long 1/4" diameter--seven of them ion a hex pattern with one in the center--with sharpened ends so you coulf try and smash the dry ice between them using a push stick.

But I know that Denatured has an extremely low freezing point and is pretty much ideal in that respect--however the coifficient for denatured is not known to me. I could find it. But it would have to be better than air--which is what would be in the voids if you did not use alcohol.

Liquids tend to boil when adding DICE hence the use of only a few inches to fill voids between pins or whatever.

I can't see much benefit of using a tube that is much taller than 16"--I think 12" would be plenty tall. Again these are guesses based on what I have seen of other people's set ups.

The main problem I hear about DICE is the need to crush it to increase the surface area and contact. Hence my suggestion to use denatured alcohol to avoid that hassle. I have seen pins of different types--some sharpened some not--even in LN2 set ups I have seen brazed pins.

If you are not going to braze together a tube and base what exactly are you going to do to contain the DICE?

Well, Burn and myself have gotten together and he knows a lather in his area who is going to spin me a pot up with his CNC lathe (I guess thats what it's called) It's known as a solid container. Made from one solid piece of aluminum or copper (or any other metal of your choice.)

As far as the liquid goes, I'll be using Methanol, as that allows down to -90*c (in a extremely efficient pot). Ethyl is apparently the best (-100*c) but also pretty damn dangerous.

I'm drawing up a tube right now in paint. Maybe I'll pPM it to ya and get your opinion.

I understand..I was like WTH how is he gonna make that? But on a lathe it should be a no brainer..

All that to save welding

That will make for a sweet one!

Wood alcohol, methyl is another name for Denatured...

I can hardly wait.

So Burn is actually good for something afterall...I'll be

I think these transformer avatars are working!

Well this might help you with the mounting

Heres the design of piotres's new pot , you might be able to do something similar . my pot has rings of small holes

Maybe if you have some crazy time on your hands you could make something like the NL3 pot from top mods
