Pentium D 940 Hangs Up

Thread Starter
I have just built a real simple PC but I have noticed that the CPU seems to pause every few seconds. Its not an exact timed thing but there is definitely a pause in the processing.

The way I discovered this was when I was listening to music on it to make sure the sound card was configured correctly and the equalizer was adjusted right. The music would kinda skip and pause throughout all the songs.

I then opened up a notepad file and just held down a key. I then saw that every about line and a 1/2 or so there would be just a little blip and the letter wouldn't come right out but it seemed to pause.

Anyone know what would cause this to happen? It's as though the processor just cuts out for a split second.

Thanks in advance!

I would take out the sound card and see if it still happens.

It sounds like your harddrive goes into a power saving mode and slows downand hen takes a few seconds to spin-up and then it tries to spin down right away.

I tried the swapping of the soundcard into another pc I have but it still happens. As far as the HD doing something funny, I use to have this same drive in an old setup I had a few months ago and it ran flawless.

sounds like a process running in the background. open task manager, and see if you can determine what it is, then shut it down.

I'm not sure what you mean by swapping the sound card. Just take it out of the PC in question and see if the problem comtinues. Do not replace it with another card. As far as the hard drive, I dont think that is the problem.

There was a question above about loading the chipset drivers. Did you do all that?

Is your computer overclocked at all? If it is, you can put everything to stock and see if the problem continues.

Since it is a new build, there has to be a point where the problem started happening. The trick is to find out where that point is. It could help to start from scratch and run with just 1gb of memory and no sound card and all stock speeds. Install windows that way and then install the chipset drivers. Then do the windows updates that are absolutely needed and see if you still have the problem before and after that.

I have the exact same sound card just in another PC. So I thought I would rule out that it was the card but it still happened.

I did make sure all the chipset drivers were loaded. All up to date.

I did have it OC'd but I then I thoughted I'd bring it back to stock. Same issue happens.

I could do a clean install and all but it's kinda a pain. I'll go ahead tonight and see if the onboard audio also does this still.

I assume you don't see any process running in the task manager that is eating up cpu and cycling up and down?

Yea it's not the actual sound card. It has something to do with the physical processor I believe.

I checked task manager and don't see anything hogging up the CPU. Here's a screenshot I took of it.
