Try to find out the model, but many motherboards will run dual-core processors. Some won't w/o a BIOS update... so you might want to find out.

Might need to tighten up some grammar/punctuation.

EDIT: Opty all the way, L2 cache Opty>Toledo

Too sleepy to remember what HT means... something with transport and threading, transport being AMD, and intel being threading

Both have the same HT. The opteron has more cache though so I would suggest that one.

Is your friend going to overclock?

If yes, then go for the Opteron. (Most Socket 939 motherboards will run a Socket 939 Opteron.)

If absolutely not, then go for the marginally faster X2 4200+.

The HT for both CPUs is actually identical. The difference is how it's presented. HT is AMD's equivalent to Intel's FSB. It's double-pumped (as opposed to quad-pumped for Intels). Opterons' HT are quoted as 1000MHz (pre-double pumping figure), while Athlons (including X2 dual-cores) are always quoted as the double-pumped 2000MHz.

The things these marketing people think off...

Hope this information helps!
