8800GTS 320 And 640 In Sli

Thread Starter
i think i recall hearing someone using a 8800 320mb and a 640 mb in sli

I was wondering if anyone knows if this is possible and if it is what sort of performance does it offer ?

Sorry if it soudns weird but i was just wondering.

I reckon it might work as they are both using the same core, it's just RAM chip density is different. I'm not sure.

Perhaps you'll only be able to use a total of 640MB of the memory (320x2) Or so.. hmm..

It should be possible in theory since SLI does support mismatched memory sizes. However, you will only get 320MB effective out of both cards. Also, it does not always work. Why would you spend the extra money on a 640MB card when you already have a 320MB one?

When SLIing you only use 320mb in that case....it is the cores you are utilizing and not the memory.

According to Nvidia it is possible to use two identicle GPU's with differing amounts of memory.

Quote:
Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?

While it is not recommended, NVIDIA does offer this flexibility using Coolbits. When purchasing a second graphics card, you should try to match the memory size so that you are ensured full value and performance from your purchase. For example, if your first card is a GeForce 6600 GT with 128MB of memory, you should purchase a second GeForce 6600 GT with 128MB of memory. However, using Coolbits (value set to 18), you can force both of the cards to use the lower of the two memory sizes and operate together in SLI mode. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together using Coolbits, the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the two memory sizes.
