cooling

This is just a thought i had it may be really stupid but i was just thinking. Would it cool better if they had the core and heatsink on the top of the card not the bottom. I mean heat does rise and wouldnt the heat from the core travel more easily into the haetsink if it was on top. I know they would have to change alot on the card but doesnt it just seem like it would cool better. Okay thats my completley useless thought but it makes sense in my mind.

It's also completely true... frankly I have no idea why they keep doing it this way. The hot air goes up, not down, not sideways. Some VID card manufacturers have experimented with this kind of cooling, but the major obstacle is the mobos aren't ready for som' like that. For ex, my PCIe card, if it were possible to turn it upside down it wouldn't fit. The BigTy and the VF700 could fit if the PCIe port would be 2cm lower, but that would mean the mobo looses a PCI port.

I don't give a dam' about that, but apparently someone does, as this down facing cards defy logic. Nice for pointing it out

Isn't that one reason why some Lian-Li and Silverstone cases you have to mount the motherboard upside down?

Take your 2 slot cooler on the GTX, it has around 3 cm in height. If you'd have 3cm of clearance above the VID card, it would work in your case.

Still, your VID card pulls air from below (logic) and exhausts outside of the case, from where it can do whatever it pleases, go up for ex. That exhaust system works better with the current down facing VID cards, as in the other case it would pull air directly from below the CPU (which is likely to be hotter).

Inverted ATX!

However, does it really make a difference? Video card heatsinks are not usually passively cooled. The fan airflow has a much great impact than convection alone.

A quick experiment... load your GPU and find max temp. Now flip your case and run the same tests. I doubt temps will vary that much.
Once again...

it's a throwback to the old days... an ISA cards component side used to face up... then PCI came out... when no PCI devices existed... so they put the PCI slot in the space between the ISA slots... and had to flip the cards to make them fit the backplane...

would be nice if manufacturers made the card with PCI-express connectors on both sides... and had the port connectors on a little daughter card that could be flipped... so i could place the card where i wanted...

This is also addressed in the BTX form factor...

My rig for example could use a flipped PCIe vid card, as below the card there's a heat bag that forms. If I had a HSF that spits the hot air outside, it would be better, but it stays in, and slowly heats up the air in the lower part of my case.
