Another GPU choice. 7900GS? Opinions anyone?

Thread Starter
I am in the 100$ range for GPU. DX10 is not a necessity as I game less and less these days. This is a card I was considering, EVGA 7900GS. Want opinions on whether that would be best card for 100$. I used this list to compare cards - here - 7900GS seems to me like the best performing card around 100. If I missed something please inform me.

I run two 17in dell ultrasharp flat panels which I run @ 1200x1028 resolution. Also I would prefer two DVI connections. I want to keep a nvidia card because of my 680I board. Any comments and suggestions welcome.

I also found this 6800 and thought about SLI. Would two of these be worth the money? I have been wanting to mess around with SLI but don’t want to sacrifice too much performance for my dollar. I know that SLI helps mostly with high res, which I do not use, so I am going to guess that SLI here would not gain much performance. But if it would be close (20% or less performance drop than above card) I might do it just to play around with SLI.

Thanks for the info and help.

I am looking for this 6800 also but the comments seem worry me a bit but with rebate. I may give it a try.

I would avoid that list, it is highly flawed.

look at sites such as tomshardware.com charts

they do good tests on cards.

What ever you do don't go by 3dmark, it is useless, just look at how highly the 8600GT and 8600GTS rank, now look at any other gaming benchmark and see how they rank.

You should be fine with that card, I am actually considering the same thing now that you have brought that to my attention.

don't do it. the 6600GT in SLI is about on par with a single 7600GT

I have been reading many threads and the 7900GS seems to OC well and I can’t find any cards for the same price that perform better. Seems like for 100$ the 7900GS is a great card. All other nvidia cards that perform better in MOST benchmarks on toms are more expensive. Agree?

The 7900gs can be overclocked past the speed of a 7900gt easily so I would get one I <3 Mine

I was hoping to get some information about the Zalman vf700-CU cooler. Is this the best bang per buck to cool a 7900GS (v-mod to 1.4 -1.5)? My budget for a video card package is 150$. 7900GS 105$ shipped, Zalman vf700-cu 35$ shipped, AS5 5$ equals 145$ is about perfect. I think I’ll order it tonight if no comments are made to the negative side of this. Thanks for info so far and a rep for toms link.

I have a Foxconn 7900GS with a VF900 cooler and like it a lot... (it can run at 700/1900MHz with above 6000 on 3dMark06)

That being said, I feel like my money could have been better spent on a more expensive card with a stock cooler. This may be a better plan unless you really want to overclock. If you want the fun of OCing, then the 7900gs is great.

You should also consider going with a 7950GT which can be gotten for about $150 AR, or a 8600GTS which is about the same price.

The 8600GTS appears to be performing pretty bad in games though, so take that into account... but it does given you DX10. You can expect a highly overclocked 7900GS to performs slightly worse than a 7900GTX at modest resolutions.

If you would consider ATI, the X1950XT would also be a very strong card for about $160.

Just something to think about...

If you end up going with the 7900GS, spend the extra $5 and go with the VF900 (it is great) or with the ZEROtherm GX810 if it comes back in stock.

FYI, you can get the VF700-Cu and VF700-AlCu from Amazon for $32.50 and $30 shipped, respectively.

Thanks for the info, I have never OC a gfx card so I don’t want to spend too much money on one that I may destroy. I want to try a v-mod. From what I have read a 7900GS will OC well and run any DX9 games very well. And with the rebates to get one and a great cooler for under 150$ seems like the best deal right now.

On the DX10 note I am planing on upgrading yearly to a new GFX card in the 150$ range. So by next year when I upgrade the 8800’s will probably be near my price range and then I might go vista and DX10. I think I’m going to let the DX10 market settle out before I jump in. Thanks for all your links and input I believe I will go for the vf900 cooler +rep for that.
