How's this for an upgrade

Thread Starter
Below, you can see my current specs, and I have a $500 budget to upgrade.

Here's what I really am set on: x-fi xtreme gamer and OCZ Platinum 2GB

which leaves $300 for anything else. I was thinking on upgrading my processor, but with socket 939, this is limited - however I found a pretty nice processor, and was wondering if you recommend it, or recommend anything different that would be a better choice on upgrading my computer. On a side note...I'd like a nice heatsink to oc this baby.

X-Fi

AMD Opteron 185 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103002

Thanks for your help,

I would say a Mobo/CPU/RAM combo would be better dollar for dollar, since RAM is so cheap right now. You could get a good ASUS AM2 mobo, Brisbane 3600+, and 2 GB of DDR2 800 for $300 if you wanted to. It's up to you, though.

Here's a Good Set-Up in your price range:

Brisbane 3600+: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103046
ASUS M2N-E: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131022
2 GB OCZ DDR2 800: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227175

Total Price: $289 + Shipping

That with an X-Fi and your 7900 GT would be a great rig for the money.

I know, I was saying the 7900 GT would be a great video card to match up well with the rig I posted. If you need any further help, feel free to PM me.

I agree with the Brisbane, new mobo, and RAM. If you're upgrading anyway it'd be counterproductive to not go AM2.

You may also want to check out an Audigy rather than the Xtreme Gamer. Should be able to save some money and get better overall music quality, IMO. You lose EAX support but eh

Core 2 Duo E6750 = 185$ after july 27
P5N-E sli = 129$
2*1GB DDR-800 OCZ gold 68.99$ after MIR or 2gb OCZ platinium 2 for 80$
X-fi Xtreme gamer = 60$ after MIR

total: 450$ approx shipped

Dont you dare upgrade video card unless you get an 8800gts 640MB or better.
Tips: Sell your current rig afterwards, you can get at least 400$ for cpu, gpu, ram and mobo (buy a cheapo case and an xclio 450W psu if necessary for 50$

with those funds, 8800gts 640MB, HD2900XT 1GB DDR4 or who knows, maybe a GTX?

EDIT: Nevermind on the 8800gts 640, a 320mb will do just as well unless you game ABOVE 1600*1200. EVGA 8800gts for 256$

I agree on the sound card. EAX, IMHO, is overrated compared to a high quality sound card (which is why I don't have an X-Fi). If you just get a 192 KHz / 24-bit sound card made by a decent company, then the sound quality will be head and shoulders above onboard or that cheap X-Fi, it will take the load off of your CPU, and it will be just a little more money before the rebate. If you have the cash for that card before rebate, then spend $15, get a Bluegears b-Enspirer, and have much MUCH better sound quality overall, even if you don't have EAX.
