New To OCing and need help

Hey guys,

As you can see i am new here and new to overclocking in general. What promted me to overclock my machine is that I recently upgraded to Vista and Counter Strike Source gets random lag spikes. I have asked an old friend of mine to come overlock my machine but hes being a pric and insists not to on the basis that my machine will be better than his lol.

Anyways, my motherboard is an Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe. I hear this board is good for overclocking. Ive been reading posts and such on overclocking my processor and it seems that when you overclock your processor it also affects your RAM.

This is the post I plan on using for when I get into adjusting my settings

Okay, some more tinkering has produced the following:

* I've found that the absolute maximum Clock speed for the 3500+ Venice I have is 2806 Mhz. This at 1.67 Volts !!!!
* the GSkill memory I'm using works perfectly - need to get It's clock speeds up. Memory Timings are pretty relaxed though 2.5-8-4-4. According to GSkill the official timings are 2.5-8-4-4 at 275 Mhz with 2.8 Volts. The Chips handle 3.2 Volts without issue or Heat buildup so I think they should be able to handle DDR600 to DDR640 without issues at these current timings. at this Rate we're killing DDR2-800 (6400 Mb/sec Bandwidth) and close to DDR2-1066 (8000 Mb/sec Bandwidth) !!!! This RAM is so amazing, but I need to upgrade to 2 Gigs !!!! Maybe importing more GSkill will do well.
* Maximum FSB even with x3 Hypertransport is 266 Mhz. Apparently HT can go to 1500 without issue, so will Up it's multiplier next try.

So all in all, we're getting closer. I don't see myself hitting 3 Ghz with this processor, but I can see DDR-600 without any issues and HT in the 1200/2400's - time will tell.

My watercooling setup is holding up well. CPU idles at 28 loads at 35 - the Artic Silver has bedded in nicely.

Current Setups:

FSB: 266 Mhz
Hypertransport: 1064 Mhz / 2128 Mhz
Memory: 280 Mhz (DDR 560) 2.5-8-4-4 1T Command Rate
CPU Multiplier: 10.5
CPU Clock: 2792 Mhz
The thing that worries me is that I have Value RAM so wont that like ruin it the ramÉ And also is that sufficient information to run off of once I get into the BIOSÉ

Also I will be using the Tuniq Tower for cooling.

Here is the CPU-Z of my processor.

Thanks in advance.

Cool, I used to have that proc.
The value ram might hold you back, but you could still get an oc out of it.
what do I know. I still have value ram now and have never attempted to.

On the 939 MBs most are good to about 1100 on the HT soem even 1200 but beyond that stability will usually become an issue.

BTW, HI and WELCOME to OCN

Overclocking effects the RAM
Yes and in two ways.
1. The HTT, regardless of the base RAM speed set, the HT works from a 200MHz default.
2. The divider or setting the RAM at a default lower speed.
Not only does it have a lower default speed, but the % reduction is approximately the amount the RAM increases relative to the CPU bus increase.
I say approximately because there is a slight variable relevant to the multiplier used on the CPU.
So, if you set the DDR400 to DDR 333 speeds of 166 MHz you would gain about an 83% in RAM speed relative to every 1MHz in CPU bus speed increase.

Thanks for the welcome here. Alot of what you said almost blew right past me so I have another question :S.

If I went into my BIOS and changed my CPU settings to this

FSB: 266 Mhz
Hypertransport: 1064 Mhz / 2128 Mhz
CPU Multiplier: 10.5

to acheive the results of the guy above, what would need to be changed on my RAM to keep it safe because as I said its only value RAM,
