9th Birthday Build Log (I am no CD or Goby) 56K no no

So my son is going to be 9 on July 28th and he has always wanted his own computer, since I am on mine all the time, and his mother does not have one at her house (life without the internet, wow, that's stone age). So I am making him one.

Now I am no CyberDruid or Goby (though, these two I idolize because of their tremendous work, I am sorry I left that part out), or for that matter anyone at all, but I am going to give it a try.

My son goes to Calvary Baptist school, and he loves his school. He plays all the sports he can, and is number 8 on every team. So I am going to do his pc in his school colors, the same colors as the Green Bay Packers.

So it is going to be the darker green on the outside, the yellow/gold on the inside, with green LED fans. Now I just started this, and have never really case modded before, so bare with me.

The case I have is just a 19.99 dealy from the local computer store. I got an ECS mobo (mATX) and a Sempy 2600+. I got 1 meg ddr pc3200, a 40 gig hd, a dvd rom/cd burner, floppy, and maybe a fan controller if I can find one easy enough to paint, a PNY FX 5200, and a wireless pci card so he can put it in his room and not have to have any cables running to his pc. He plays miniclip a lot and webkins.

So far all I have done is cut out an 80mm hole on the side panel for a vent line to the cpu and a top 120mm hole and got the 2 layers of auto primer on this bad boy. So here are some pics! (I scaled them down to 1024x768 since my 10 megapixel camera wants to take 6000x5460 and the file sizes were 12 megs plus)

Here is the side panel. It already had the vent for the VGA area of the board and I added the 80mm hole for the cpu vent.

Here is the frame. I ran out of primer so I will have to wait until tomorrow.

Closer look at the reset switches.

So that is it so far. This primer says 4 hour dry time, so I will be back at it tomorrow with more pictures. Thanks everyone!

I hope he is not mad that I got his scooby doo porch chair all painted up!?!

He'll be real happy if you get him a crazy good pc for his birthday. One just like yours would last him a good long while. My parents only ever spent 100 bucks max for my birthday, except for one birthday two years ago when they spent 400.

On the front of the pc, where the 5.25" drive bays are, I am going to do his number 8 in yellow and the rest will be green. Thanks everyone for the motivation and kind words.

that is one present i would love to have gotten as a child, (i was and still am number 8). Don't feel pressured to put better components in it, like you say all he needs it for is browsing. i know this will make it more difficult, but LED's would really make the computer pop.

LEDs would be sweet, but I would have to find some that have switches, because when he goes to bed, before he hits the hay he will open up F@H and fold for OCN. So I don't want his computer lit up like the fourth of July and he not sleep.

Here is the front 3 drive bays prepped for the #8 stencil

The mobo tray

The frame from the side

The frame from the back

Here is the bottom of the front cover prepped with the green to see the offset of colors

Mobo side panel

The topper

This is the back side panel, prepped with yellow, I am going to go a CAVS stencil in the yellow and then top it off with the green.

O.k. so the top panel looks like it has about 800 mosquitos stuck to the paint. What is a good way to sand down spray paint without royally forking it up?

It would be easier to wip it off with lacquer thinner and some rags...lots eaier and less work.

I found that bugs love them some high ester VOCs so I tie a rag soaked with lacquer thinner or Tolulene about 15 feet from where I want to be bug free--the bugs go for the rag and leave the paint alone..somewhat.

The other thing to do is never work at night with a light...work somewhere that you can keep bug free if possible (screen porch) and/or bring the work inside directl after spraying to keep the bugs from landing..

They like the shine the like the smell..and they are a real prob
