Anyone have any idea how to VNC/Remote Desktop when dealing w/ a firewall

Ok, here's the deal, at my work (as like most offices), they have very tight security and pretty much all outgoing ports are blocked.

Now, this poses a problem for me, because my trading software requires 2 ports to be open (in the 4000 range). If I ask them to open those ports, the response is obviously going to be no.

There are a few things that I have tried, that did not work.

1 is to remote desktop into my machine, did not work.

Another is to use something like RealVNC (www.realvnc.com, it's a free software to allow remote access to another machine). Now, I tried running my VNC server on port 80.. doesn't work.. then tried running it on port 443, still did not work.

I also tried accessing my machine from the VPN. At home, I can access my work's machine just fine w/ the VPN, but not vice versa..

Anybody have any ideas?

Asking my IT dept is NOT an option. Just about every port is locked down, and they're not making exceptions unless you're someone w/ a lot of pull (And seeing how i been there for a month, that's not me)

(Note: I'm not trying to do anything that I'm not supposed to do, like surf porn sites or something. The issue is I have a brokerage that does not use a web based trading system, which means I have to use the software which requires particular ports. Personal trading is also allowed.)

if you can install aim on your comptuer and the computer at work you can set up net meeting to automaticlaly accept all calls then share desktop.

it will be like a remote desktop, but except through aim.

i also work at a corporate office and our security is pretty tight. remote desktop should work though. are you use you have it setup right? have you ever done it to your computer before?

I believe they blocked remote desktop.

Also, is it possible my ISP is blocking all ports under 1024 or something?

Nope, just tested on a separate connection, I can get in on port 443 (which should be open @ work as well, since that's the https port)

It does not work for some reason though.

most likely corporate office do not block outgoing ports. a lot of times incoming ports are blocked.

ISP's should not block any ports to a home unless they have good reason, they do not block remote desktop.

Have you ever got remote desktop to work on your computer?

your computer at home has to be be xp PRO or media center or vista. xp home will not let you remote desktop to it. ALSO if your computer at home is behind a router you need to foward tcp port 3389 to your computer (your computer's private IP).

and when you log on via remote desktop [if you're behind a router], you connect your ip assigned by your isp, NOT your computer's private ip. and you must log on via an admin account, (im not sure but it might need to have a psssword). if your trying to remote desktop to a ip something like 192.xx.xxx.xx then you are using the wrong ip.

I tried to remote desktop to it. Did not work. Port 3389 is blocked from my work.

And almost all outgoing ports are blocked other then 80 and 443

Is there any way to make remote desktop use port 443?
Q.What port does Remote Desktop use? Does everything go over port 3389?
A.Port 3389 is the only port you need to open. Windows will attempt to stream sound through User Datagram Protocol (UDP) first. If no port is available for UDP, sound will stream through a virtual channel in Remote Desktop Protocol, which uses port 3389.

Q.How do I connect Windows Desktop Client to a remote port other than 3389?
A.In the Computer field in the Remote Desktop Client connection dialog, specify the port in either of the following ways:

Computer name, colon, port number

Example: TSComputer: 22229

IP address, colon, port number

Example: 192.168.1.1: 22229

How do i make the SERVER accept it on port 443?

Because I can specify it on the client, but it wont connect (even on my non-firewalled connection)
if all else fails you can try setting up windows messenger and using remote assitance, but the downside is you have to accept from the other end.
but once you get it up and running, just don't turn it off, then you'll be set. LOL but of course this being done is highly unlikely
