Here's another chance to help me make up my mind about some frivolous details involving ridiculous amounts of hardware.

No this does not have to make sense.

Yes this does have to be uber incredible.

I have a pair of 15K RPM Cheetahs and a SCSI u320 card that I believe will run RAID 0.

I have 4 74 GB Raptors and 4 250 GB Seagate 7200.10 Barracudas

I have an Areca 1210 and I have a mobo with 4 headers and RAID0.

Since I must decide which 4 SATA would you run in Hardware RAID 5 on the Areca?

And the next question: Which array would you run the OS from? RAID5? RAID0 SCSI? RAID0 onboard?

Thanks!

Is the SCSI card PCI or PCI-E? Either way it would probably limit the throughput of the Cheetahs..

I would go with RAID0 Raptors I think.. Great access time and performance and no need for redundancy since WD's rarely fail.

Yep I ran benchmarks too. The Cuda scream on Burst and Read..The Raps win on random access.

The SCSI card is PCIX but would go on the PCI bus infortunately...the seek times there are even shorter though..and I have found those Cheetahs to be very quick for desktop work.

What u320 SCSI controller? How many pins are those SCSI drives? and what model cheetahs? 15k.4 or 15k.5? If you got 80pin drives and need a converter I would strongly recommend against raid0. Those converters are a hub for logical errors.

The controller on a normal PCI slot will max out at 160mb/s. So with 2 drives you should be ok on the PCI slot. However 64 bit PCI slots max at 530mb/s(think) and PCI-X slots 1.06GB/s(no bottleneck).

But yup SCSI 15k raid, can't beat it.

Thanks for tthe info I will ttake a look and see.

u320...80 pin

even at 160 they would be pretty awesome.

One day I hope to have a workstation--I am still waiting for the perfect board to come out...

The only workstation boards I know of that are good for overclocking are all made by Asus, P5WDG2-WS PRO, P5NT-WS, and P5K-WS. I got the pro board and it works well, just the board has technical limitations that prevent me from overclocking my PC8500 dominators past 1000mhz, lower than their stock speed.

I myself am tempted to get the P5K-WS or the P5NT-WS (SCSI raid with SLI makes me drool) but it is still too early for me to make that jump with Penryn around the corner. Last time I did something like that, I got the P5WDG2-WS and expected it to support conroe. Things changed at the last minute and I needed to upgrade to the P5WDG2-WS Pro. $800CAN spent on 2 mobos within 3 months of each other. I won't believe the P5K-WS supports Penryn until I see it.

I still have the P5WDG2-WS board if you would be interested in it. It has 2x PCI-X 133mhz slots. It would come with my old Intel 940 Pentium D.
