A bit confused about P35, 650i & 680i

Thread Starter
Been pouring over all the info on these forums for the last couple days as I am getting ready to attempt to build my first system, and I'm still a bit confused at to what motherboard would be the best fit for me. What exactly are the differences between the P35, 650i & 680i boards? I know the 650 and 680 are NVIDIA and support SLI while the P35 is Intel and does not, but some P35 boards (the Gigabyte) seem to be better for OCing and have DDR3 support. Both seem to have their ups and downs. Then there's the X38 coming down the pike and I'm still not entirely sure why that is such a huge deal and if it would be worth waiting for it.

To help you a bit, I suppose I should tell you what I want to do with my rig, and what I've already decided on.

I want to have a all around solid computer that can handle most any game I want to toss at it. Music production, etc. could also be a feature I decide to get involved with, so a good soundcard is probably a smart investment.

In terms of what I've already decided on when it comes to parts:

*Q6600 from TankGuys (the G0 or whatever it is) once the price drops.
*Lian Li V1000 case.
*A RAID 0 array using either the Seagate 7200.10s, or even better, the 7200.11s (any idea when those are coming out?) or the new WDs that just got a fantastic review at Tom's Hardware, along with a 500GB storage drive.
*4 GIGs of RAM, not sure which kind.
*I'm a bit hesitant to shell out for the 8800GTX as the NVIDIA 9 series should be coming down the pipe in Q4 of this year, so maybe a 8800GTS 320MB to hold me over until then.
*Tuniq Tower or Thermaltake 120 Ultra
*750W PSU (PC Power & Cooling / Silverstone / Enermax)
*Samsung Syncmaster 226BW 22" LCD (already own this)
*Saitek Eclipse II
*Logitech 518 gaming mouse.
*Pioneer DVD burner.
*Soundcard - still unsure.

I do plan on overclocking, but don't need to push it hard as 1) I've never done it before so don't know how and 2) really don't want to burn out my stuff.

SLI could be nice, but the way I see it, one 8800 series, or certainly one of the new 9 series, is way more than enough, especially since my monitor won't go past 1600 by 1080 I think it is. Am I wrong about this? Is SLI a must have for a system that wants to be able to game well for a few years at the very least?

Any opinions on good motherboards for this system? Any comments on the build so far? Any glaring mess ups / omissions?

Thanks.

wel....the p35 RAID is better than the n680i raid from what've heard and if ur just going solo with a good card just go with a p35 as its cheaper than the n680i boards in general or if u want sli wait for x38

ASUS P5K Deluxe recommended, if you dont plan on SLI. (honestly, 1 GTX is more than enoguh)
