Okay, I need some help setting up a duel boot system...

Here is the deal:

I have Vista...it's okay for surfing and stuff, but honestly games simply work better on XP. Now I could set up a duel boot system on my main hard drive, but I'm not sure how to do that, and even if I knew how, you have to do XP before Vista, otherwise you have to delete Vista, which I don't feel like doing.

However, I have an 80GB external drive...Is it possible to partitian XP to my external and keep Vista on the main drive? And then when I boot I just choose what hard drive to boot from?

I could really use your help mates, rep for all who try to help

Unless there's a third party app out there somewhere, you MUST install the oldest OS first. If you feel lucky, you could try installing XP on the external drive, then doing an "upgrade" installation of Vista. I've done it with older OSes (2k and XP) in this manner but I'm not sure if Vista will like it.

I'd suggest trying to do an "upgrade" install of Vista on the internal drive AFTER installing XP on the external drive...maybe Vista won't get too scrambled that way. Make sure to do a backup first...just in case. Good luck

Edit: to clarify...the issue with installing OSes in the wrong order is that each OS has specific boot files (ntldr.dll and such) that are tailored to that OS and are backwards compatible but not forward compatible. This means that the ntldr.dll file from XP does not recognize Vista as anything other than a random folder on your HD. By installing the older OS first, you allow the newer OS to replace these files with the updated version that can recognize both OSes.

My theory is that by installing XP on the external drive, you will overwrite these files with the older versions from XP. At this point you will be unable to boot into Vista but XP will boot without an issue. When you do an upgrade install of Vista on the drive that already contains Vista, you will once again replace these files, but with the newer ones this time so that you will be able to boot into both XP and Vista. By using the upgrade installation option, you should be able to keep all the data and most of the settings applied to your current Vista install.

I have one HD with vista and then I installed XP on my second drive. THen you just fix the bootloader and use a program to make XP an entry.

Any idea why I put the XP disc in and the "Install XP" button is grayed out? I partitioned some space on my external but I can't get much further if it's grayed out. What should I do?

It's because you are running Vista. MS has a check in place to keep you from using the install/upgrade functions from older OSes on a newer OS. You should be able to boot off the XP disk and just select the empty HD partition to install to.
