This is from someone who has both on hand right now and is not too impressed with the 2900XT...
well im really looking to hit as close to 10k as possible, and i would have X1950 XTX in crossfire, not PRO. would that help the decision?

not with your P965 chipset. i've read reviews, and ATi did remarkable things with their drivers to get great CF performance with this chipset. this was using 1900 and 1950 cards and the dongle. i'm not sure how well it works with the internal bridge.

i'd link you if i could, but i read reviews showing CF working as well @ x16/x4 on our chipset as it did with x8/x8 on the 975X chipset.

XTX's are faster than Pro's. assuming the rest of your system is comparable to what CD had, you should have better performance than he got.

i asked for a CF Master Card for my birthday in 10 days. if i get one (not holding my breath), i'll make sure to put up benchies so you can decide for yourself if it's worth it. stay tuned. my current 3DMark06 score is 6,709.

awesome, so guess it comes down to, has any1 had specific experience with 1 hd2900 vs x1950 xtx crossfire? my mate has the HD2900 so i know how hard they can go. i had an x1950xt 256mb crossfired with my card. stupid move, didnt do anything coz of the massive difference between cards (512 vs 256mb, ddr3 vs ddr4)

** By the way, cheers for all the replies guys, im noob to these forums and yous are excellent really helps to have a decent community **

Yes

I have both set ups.

My rig is giving me some issues--i may have a damaged Q6600...I dunno-for whatever reason my benchmarks on the P35 board are 2000 lower than on the 975X board and the CF X1950pro are within 1K of the 2900XT 1GB.

Hope that helps.

so if the X1950 PRO's r within 1k of beatin ur HD 2900 1gb, the XTX's should match it. its definitely a more feasible option for me if its the case, although the hd 2900 1gb would be some serious future proofing, for future Crossfire setups.

The 1 GB DDR4 is far nicer from what I have been able to determine--quieter and cooler and somewhat less power hungr. The Memory runs at 1000 stock.

I did a mild OC of 800 1001 and it responded with a cople hundred gain int he bench.

It seems to be a nice card--I was really hoping for 10K but I guess instead I discovered my rig is crap...hard to believe $1000 is crap but it is...a Quad with only one core is crap... the rst of the rig is now suspect as I will not be sure what the issue is until I change everything out and see where the fault lies.

I may have time to bench the card on another rif...not sure.

At this point I am not even sure what to do...but I believe the card is in perfect shape
