I play Oblivion with the settings cranked + Qarl's textures on my 1680x1050 monitor with no problems (40-60 fps). The results speak for themselves.

As for having problems down the road with dx10 games, give me a freakin' break. Dx10 is a gong-show of follies, and I'd need Vista to run it anyway (no thanks). As long as I can run Fallout 3, Team Fortress 2, and Bioshock with all the pretties, I'll be happy with the 320mb card I bought.

What if you're pushing 1920x1200?

They're two cards for two different types of people. 3DMark they'll get the same scores but the RAM gets important >1600x1200.

So if 320mb is supposed to be a waste then why all the 512MB+ cards out there?

...or is this issue only with the 8800GTS? I highly doubt that there is really no performance gain with the extra memory since I've seen 256v512 cards in action and there was a notable difference. These people probally only wanted to stir up trouble and get attension on a contraversal subject.

I mean heck...why not go after the HD2900's? If 320 vrs 640 is a waste what about 512 vrs 1GB?

personally I am throwing a flag on this play...

Google benchmarks on DX10 COJ and DX10 COH you can see there is a much bigger difference between 640 and 320, atleast in DX10.

Some games arn't even coded to take advantage of anything over 256MB, actually quite a few. Newer games will take advantage of 512 and 768......Theres no reason for 1GB of texture memory right now IMHO.

I'm not sure what you are saying? Did you read my post..? I said it doesn't matter for current games, most current games arn't even coded for anything over 256MB...
