Vantec Tornado/Zalman 6 channel Fan Controller

Got a couple questions regarding mixing up my Torando and Zalman MFC 1:
The Tornado zaps a lot of power to sound just as loud as a hair dryer on high (so I've heard) and comes with a molex cable to hook up to the psu. I was hoping to run it through the 12v/5v switch on my zalman fan controller, but I've read that if a fan doesn't get enough juice it won't start up. So I wonder if anyone can tell me if the 5v setting's going to be enough to get this fan turning?
And, can I just strip off the molex plug and run the red/black wires through the switch? If this will work, I'm hoping to set the tornado up as a side intake today, but the cable's aren't long enought to connect to the controller from the side. I've got some 22 gauge wire (not sure what the tornado's gauge is), is it possible to just strip away some of the plastic, tie up some new wire to extend its reach and slap on some electrical tape? Another possibility is attaching a molex splitter I've got to extend it. I need some experienced sage advice here...
thnx

I have the MFC-1 and Every fan I've ever connected to the 5/12V switch has started on 5V. Just snip off the molex connector, strip the wire about half and inch, twist the frayed end and attach them to a 5/12V switch via the screw mounts.

Thnx for clarifying that for me. Now what about using some 22gauge wire to extend the reach of the fan?
