Yet another RAID question... - Page 2

No dont go RAID5, its too slow on mobo controllers. You say you dont care about speed, you will with RAID5 (in some cases its twice as slow as a single drive)

Go RAID0+1 or RAID10 with 4 drives, or RAID0 with 2 drives and back up the data to an external.

Thread Starter
I think RAID5 is out of the question as you both seem to agree it's too slow.

Would RAID10 give a noticible increase in speed over just one of those drives? I think that would be the way for me to go, or are there any motherboards that would allow me to have the 4* 500Gb drive RAID10 and then a single SATA2 drive to have my OS on? Or wouldn't it be worth it with the speed of a RAID10 array?

Thanks again for your help guys.

2xRAID0, 4xRAID10, 4xRAID0+1 all should give you something like a 40-80% MB/s boost.

Almost all motherboard with RAID and 6 SATA ports can do what you need. However, you would be better off with the OS on the array. Just make sure to create a separate partition for it.

For average read speed I would say they would give you 70% to 125%.
