Help for New Build After July 22

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm planning to build my first computer after the price cuts. This will be my first build, so any help is appreciated! The comp will be used for gaming, and I do plan to overclock.

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AL1005 - Retail (Managed to order this on newegg before they were all gone)

CPU: Q6600 or E6850, still haven't decided.

Motherboard: Any suggestions? I have no clue about motherboards.

CPU Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16835154001

Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130082

Sound Card: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16829102006

Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148221

Optical Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106073

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817139002

Case: Leaning towards Antec 900... any other suggestions?

Everything above without the case, RAM, and mobo comes out to around $1050. Without including the RAM (since I bought it already), I'd like to stay under $1200 (preferably $1100), since I still have to buy a monitor. I'm thinking I can just get an 8600GTS for now and upgrade to the new gen DX10 cards when they come out if I have to save money, unless there are better downgrade options for other parts. Thanks again!

Nice PSU choice. If you want to save money, get the X1950XT, 8600GTS for DX10? Yeah right, it's like buying a Geo Metro to race against Ferraris and Lambo's, even the 8800 series can't play them well.

Budget Mobo : Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R - Best budget mobo for the quad, or if you wanna spend a little more:
ASUS P5k Deluxe - Best overclocking capabilities, reliable, etc.

If you plan on going with the Q6600, you'll want a mobo with the P35 north bridge, they've been said to overclock better with them.

If you go for the C2D, then id say go for a GA-965 series mobo, good price and ive heard good things about them

Great call on the RAM, PSU, and CPU cooler (same stuff i have )

The hard drive you have selected doesn't support Perpendicular Recording, which is said to be better performance, get two of these and put them in RAID0, trust me you'll be happier

i think an 8800GTX could ensure you good DX10 playability sir

If you mean 20FPS, then sure. Might be the games or drivers, or both but if he wants to save money then the X1950XT is a better choice, specially since he says he will upgrade to a DX10 card later.

thats the reason im getting a gtx, is so that ill be set for the DX10 onslaught of games...

since the GTX is pretty much the best card out on the market now (next to the Ultra, of course), then what is there for DX10 playability? the 9 series that eventually comes out?

im pretty sure that by that time there will be much driver support in vista and you'll see much better framerates

thats my theory, could easily be disproven

I agree with you, but until then I'm holding out. I'm building a new system as well(July 22nd) but an X1950XT seems to be a great budget card since it can pretty much still play all the games at high-res.(1600x1200) once the 8800 series proves itself worthy in DX10 games then I'll snatch me an 8800GTX.

yea that's alot safer IMO, i probably should do the same, but after i build my computer, i don't want to have to open it up again for a LONG time
