Quad only shows one core? Any ideas? - Page 2

I'm sure you've already checked this.. but in the BIOS there should be a setting for how many cores you would like to enable/disable on multi-core processors.

Notice on any extreme phase record shot, even Q6600's are dropped to 1 core/1 thread to achieve the lowest temperature. I know that a recent E6600 build I did for a friend on a 680i had the option to disable one core... you should have that too.

Anyway, good luck!

EDIT: And isn't that Audi's Q? You should PM him asking him if it ever happened to him or something... just a thought.

Well I have and I do not think he would do something like that...

Anyway I have gone into BIOS repeatedly and never seen that switch.

Is it called something odd I would overlook?

It's possible, on the 680i it wasn't too far out there.. something like "CPUID Multi Core" or something along those lines..

However, does the P35 have some type of deep power down function like EIST that disables cores when not in use? Could be a C1E or EIST issue..

I think it's a chip problem I've seen people complain on other sites of the same thing. Swap to the E6600 and see what haps then just RMA it.

But he bought the chip from a fairly reputable member of our own community... the only way it could have been screwed up was during the shipping process. I'd like to think Audi wouldn't sell a crippled chip.

Set up a small (8-12GB) partition and install Windows 2000 (or Windows 2003 Server if you got it) and see if it reads ok on that.

My rig went completely stupid when I was on 939 and went from single core -> dual core. CPU-Z showed the X2 as having one core and 7 threads, Orthos only found one core, Windows found 3 cores, and Super Pi was really really slow and crashed sometimes when it was finished calculating. Reinstalling fixed it.

Only 1 way to find out swap them. Hopefully it's not. I don't think audi would have on purpose.

Unless he never noticed...

I mean I ran this chip for weeks using four F@H clients with machine IDs 1,2,3,4 and never noticed if it was running on four cores.

It was not until I started seriously benching the rig looking for ultimate scores that I noticed how low the CPU is scoring in every bench... I mean my E6300 benches on the same board pwn this CPU..the E6600 benches on the 975X board pwn all...

This is a very good point. You might have to call up MS and try to deactivate your key for Vista for a reinstall, but that would be better than RMA'ing a perfectly good CPU. And MS is usually pretty easy to grant you a new key or re-issue your current one if you just explain your situation.
