Overclocking a 170 Opteron..

Hi everyone

So basically, I bought a 170 Opteron, over a X2 4200 for my skt939 Av8 board.
From what I heard on many forums is that the 170 Opteron overclocks very well for various reasons. I have upgraded from a 3500 Venice, which was overclocked to 2.7ghz on air (Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu).
That scored 31 seconds in super pi, where as my 170 Opteron scored 40 on stock.

My ram is corsair Pc3200 DDR400 2-2-2-5, which is stable at DDR500 2.5-3-3-7, it can also reach DDR600, but with very loose timings.

My 170 Opteron will not past 2.2ghz stable, im writing this post while its at 2.5ghz, but it cant run super pi let alone Prime95. I've increased the vcore up to 1.6volts which sounds stupid tbh as other people are overclocking it to 2.8ghz with 1.4volts.
Also I was under the impression the multiplier could go above 10..

Any help what so ever is very welcome

as you can see above its running at stock speeds, even at that it is BSOD'ing, let alone Super Pi or Prime95, it was at 2.5ghz like I said, but heavens know how it worked at that speed.

Have you tried 3x HT in the your bios? Try 3x and do the oc again. You shouldn't need that much volts at 2.2ghz.

When I said stepping I meant the stepping that is written on the IHS of the proc.

Increasing VCore to mad levels doesn't help with stability. It only produces (a whole lot of) excess heat.

There may be several reasons why your Opteron 170 can't scale higher than 2.2GHz. When did you buy your Opteron? Did you buy a new one or a used one? Most of the newest chips from the latest steppings are proving to be outstanding overclockers. But it's entirely possible you simply got the runt of the litter, too.

RAM will hold you back, especially if it's defective/damaged. I'm not saying that's what you've got, since your RAM's past performance is excellent. But it's also not impossible that it could've incurred damage (through ESD or excess heat through overvolting) somewhere in time, so it'd be a good idea to test your modules using MemTest86+ or anything similar.

BSODs are most usually caused by faulty RAM, in my experience. It's very rare for AMD K8s to have defective memory controllers. Test what you can.

Hope this helps! And good luck.

Well, the possibility of my ram broken isn't nice. However, I have ordered some Ocz Pc3200 Platinum (2 x1gigs) with timings of 2-3-2-5, so maybe then it will work. Ill perform some tests now on my ram.

I've noticed that the opteron uses 110watts where as before my 3500+ Venice used 67Watts.

So what I have done is "hot-wired" my old PSU to power the gfx card, hd's and cd drive, and a spare 600watt plugged into the motherboard powering the CPU and Ram so this should in theroy provide it with all the power it needs.

Something is a miss... I don't recall any DC Opty that can do at least 2600MHz! Probably the 400w PS. BTW, if the 600W you have is a good one that alone should be fine.
As far as the wattage, it has 2 cores vs the 3200+ single core.
On the multiplier, of the 939s the FX have unlocked multipliers, the others are half locked and can only be reduced, not increased.

I have (or, had ) an Opteron that simply wouldn't overclock more than 2.4 - 2.5GHz stable. Even with crazy voltage, it simply wouldn't stay stable.

It was one of the dreaded CCBWE 0534SPMWs. Per other sources, this particular stepping was absolutely the stepping to avoid. Unless you were running a radical cooling system, there simply was no way this chip would go further than around 2.5 - 2.6GHz; it needed insane voltage levels.

I'm giving that chip away to one of my best friends. I'm building him an HTPC, and he absolutely doesn't want/need it to be overclocked.
