Dead, what???

Thread Starter
What does it mean when on attempting to boot up I get the seek to the 2 optical drives, a beep, the Asus mobo logo, and it just stops. The hard drive lite stays on for a few seconds then goes off. I cannot get into the bios either. Never had one to do this way before. Don't know where to start looking, so I need help!
I have an Asus A7V8X mobo and an Athlon XP 2800, 2 1/2 gigs of ram. This is my old standby puter, and I have just about everything on it.

Is it a long beep or a short beep? Your mobo manual should be able to tell you what it means..

It's the normal beep I get on boot up, a short single beep. Like I said, as far as I can remember, it is normaly what it does.

Yesir, I did that, and no difference. I also measured the battery's voltage and it was 3 volts, so thats not it. Never had a situation where I had a screen and couldn't get into the bios. Wierd!

Actuually it sounds like the board is shot...I had an ABIT board did that...would start, run the normal pre start screens then just sit there...I think what went out was something to do with the bridges, but not for sure...just to check try another HD or unplug every thing but the CPU and ram...well and the psu of course

So if you press delete on the ASUS logo, nothing happens?

Thanks Dot and Guruboy, but I found the problem, one I never saw before. I had a partially bad mem chip. I've had bad chips before, but they wouldn't do anything. This turd would let the puter boot as far as the logo and just stop. So I'm running on just one gig for now. It's not like the chip was a cheapie, it was a Corsair Platinum XMS. And yes Dot, I was thinking bad board too and was already looking for a replacement. Guess I will be calling Corsair, surely this chip has a guarantee!
Again, thanks
