While modding system files may scare some people, it's a better overall way to get maximum performance out of a sweet desktop environment.
Yep. Just get the uxtheme.dll file and Replacer and voila.

Soooo easy unless you have no idea what a file is and how to navigate folders

You could always take the opposing route and dedicate your XP install to the most resource free configuration as possible: no drop shadows, no bling, no transparencies, no glass effects, only the necessary visuals to present an interface, no system restore, no Windows file protection, minimal services at startup, but mostly ... jettisoning the worthless visual bling.

You'd be surprised at how much memory overhead this sort of set up will free up ...

At this point, I am not worrying too much about system resources. I don't even game much anymore. I just play on FireFox. I am waiting till I get my new rig (Q6600, P5K-Deluxe, 4GB Ballistix, 8800GTX) to splooge on gaming. So, for now, I have about 750MB of RAM not being used (with FireFox and other programs open) and only like 6% CPU usage so I have room to just make my computer visually appealing. Besides, it's no big deal to take off a skin and close programs if I do decide to do a round of CS:S once in awhile A restart would fix all that and get the stuff back up...

Thanks for listing the websites guys... Just so I am not aimlessly going through widgets all night, which ones do you guys find useful and cool?

Also, is there a really slick silver and blue looking skin that I can use? Something you have used personally that looks clean and slick? I've skinned before and a lot of skins have a gross color set up with their fonts and you can't read anything. I just want something that'll look advanced and clean!

Yes...I always go to advanced settings in the system, and put it to performance, so that it looks like I'm running a watered down win98 XD

But the performance boost is certainly noticeable, which is nice since I would to be bogging down a system i bought to perform well.

I think I am a little confused.

What programs do I need to get everything up and running?

Just to re-state: I want the sleek looking visuals of Vista plus some good widgets. What programs do I need to make XP look like Vista? Which skin should I get? I need specific skins and specific programs. I don't have a clue which to get.

Dual boot XP and Ubuntu with Beryl/Compiz Fuzion...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RskxJuu_CGM

That's mine, and I've only worked on it for about a week.
Honestly, you are doing what I did. Realize you are mostly websurfing, and that if you want to game, you can boot XP up.
Beryl blows vista away... even if just for the price point.. ($0!)

That actually looks really neat.

Will I be able to use FireFox and all my plugins with it? What kind of music player comes with it?

I have never done dual booting before, so is there any chance you could give me a little tutorial on how to get that started and where to find the stuff I need? If I have questions, i know who to harass now :-P

And yes, firefox is firefox, in XP or linux
As far as sound and such, you'll be fine.
There are more freeware apps for linux than XP and MAC combined, methinks. lol.

Style XP with the VistaXP theme

http://vistaxp-v2-vs.en.softonic.com/
I know that the start menu button doesn't look like Vista as much as some mods, but this total conversion using StyleXP uses no resources at all, merely a booted .exe and then it unloads from memory. If you want boot screens and other stuff you must keep the option set to something other than 'use no resources'....but different boot screens can corrupt your system files, causing a reformat and install.

The most disgusting widget ive seen so far is the gay analog clock i mean ***! DO YOU NEED IT FOR PEOPLE!!
Someone wasn't hugged as a child.....if you have the system resources then it doesn't matter. However style XP doesn't require resources for themes and icons. Neither does modding the system files directly, but that's less safe.

You'll be fine...not really something you want to hear! From what I've read, Linux sound drivers are sketchy for sound quality. I don't run Linux on my home PC, only at work.
