2x1GB of DDR2 800 will be a nice set up with that.

There is a HUDGE bottleneck there......
Have you ran vista yet, I use vista 64bit and at idle in desktop I use 1.02gig of ram, granted I dont use the full 4 gigs ever but it does go over 2 gigs depednign on what games I am playing like planetside and lost colony as a few. If you are going vista I would recommend 4, 3 would be fine but 2 is right at the verge. Even when I was running vista 32b it would still allmost max out 2 gigs when playing games and that wasnt doing anything in the background like say listening to music while you play games or whatever.

just all the reviews and whatnot I've seen has no performance increase over 2gb

However in your case I see alright.

Get 4Gb of DDR2 800. It's dirt cheap right now. XP 32bit will recognize 3Gb
To people doubting the performance over 2Gb:
In BF2142 with max settings, I used all but 300Mb of RAM on the larger titan maps (textures I guess), so to be ready for Crysis, ETQW, UT2k7, etc. I would most definitely suggest 4Gb. The prices are so great right now there isn't a reason to say no!
DDR3 sucks for the price ATM. Bandwidth is the same with my memory.

bandwidth in SiSandra 2007 with DDR2 833

Yeah I do to, performance wise yes to a point you wont get a performance boost as in running faster or anything, I have 4 gigs running at 500mhz 4-4-4-12 right now and its the same as 2 gigs running the same speed. I do get a little boost in some apps like 3dmark benches even though its not using all of it. Fram rates when just running say css bench theres usually not more then 1 or 2 fps difference between 2 and 4 gigs but when I have all my stuff running and playing games and alt tab out to do stuff it does help.

I think if I could easily do 3 gigs that would be enough for jsut about anything that I would throw at it.

Also to now the more ram you have the more vista uses apparently, with 2 gigs it usually uses about 950mb but with 4 gigs it uses 1.02. Maybe it can realize it has mroe resources and uses it I dont know but everything is flowing great now.
